Long running UK crime drama New Tricks is set to end with its 12th season -season 11 is currently airing on ABC.

The decision to end the series was made by BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore and the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson.

“We are incredibly proud of New Tricks and would like to thank Roy Mitchell the brilliant creator, Wall to Wall and Headstrong, and all the cast and teams involved across the 12 series,” Moore and Stephenson said in a statement.

“However, on BBC One it’s important to make room for new series and continue to increase the range of drama on the channel, so it won’t be returning after the next series airs this summer.”

The series, which follows a group of retired police officers brought back to solve cold cases originally starred Alun Armstrong, James Bolam, Amanda Redman and Dennis Waterman. The current cast includes Denis Lawson, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Tamzin Outhwaite and Waterman -the latter set to depart early in the 12th season.

There are 7 more episodes to air on ABC, where the show continues to pull big crowds on Saturday nights.

  1. This season the stories are bit more interesting than the past few seasons, but the writing for the new characters has been all over the place.

I guess they figure that once they have replaced every single character its time is up.

  2. The ABC no longer have the rights to the early seasons. The Nine Network started showing repeats of New Tricks starting at season 1 a while ago, currently up to season 4 ep 1. GEM, 8:40pm, Thu, in HD with ads. Nine also have the rights to other BBC shows previously shown on the ABC.

  3. Have been watching it from the start and can understand the decision. The original four cast members became a family and the story arcs about their respective characters kept me interested. But bit by bit as each character left, i have lost that emotional involvement. Twelve years is a good run by any show’s standard.
BTW, hasn’t Denis Waterman made good choices to keep him in work for as long as he has?

  4. I’ve not really taken to it since the cast changes. They should send Nicholas Lyndhurst back to WW2 as Gary Sparrow and bring Phil Glenister back from the 1970s as DCI Gene Hunt.

  5. Oh darn….I am loving the new group…just as much as the old….I personally feel it is just as good as ever….
I dont know what these BBC folk are thinking these days….even in repeats this show rates.

    1. Now Foyle’s War has ended, there leaves only one show left to enjoy on Saturday Nights on ABC, and now we’re going to lose New Tricks…. awwww! What a bummer! I hope ABC will set aside a night and run the entire series through, one last time, maybe on ABC-2!

  6. Always enjoyed it, the current series does not seem to be as good as previous series.

The show I think started the downhill run when they lost Redman and Armstrong.

That being said I am enjoying watching Tamzin Outwhaite in a regular series on tv.
