Execs defend early Reality numbers

"That jungle show looks a bit narrow," says Seven CEO.

timwornerSeven CEO Tim Worner and TEN CEO Hamish McLennan are both talking up their early numbers for reality shows My Kitchen Rules and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!, after both had strong launches this week.

On Monday McLennan told media that advertisers should now back the network after a premiere at 1.2m viewers -TEN’s best Reality launch since 2009.

“Revenue always follows ratings and we’ve consistently delivered on our promises since May last year,” he told The Australian. “We really feel the wind is behind us now.

But today Tim Worner is confident of My Kitchen Rules premiere at 1.6m on Seven / 7mate over both Celebrity and The Block.

“We have not ever or do not ever go the early crow but My Kitchen Rules is bigger than those other two shows put together,” also told The Australian.

“We never talk about the opposition but that jungle show looks a bit narrow to us, and a lot of their schedule rides with it,” he said. “No cause to rush them with the cheque book just yet.”

Similar comments from both are also in Fairfax press.

Nine’s David Gyngell is yet to enter the fray.

Today’s ratings will reflect MKR on a single channel.

  1. I think Seven are worried. I’ve watched a couple of episodes of “I’m a Celebrity ” on TenPlay and I think 10 has done really well – Julia & Chris are excellent as hosts (very funny).

While they aren’t really big name celebs they are quite entertaining and its interesting to listen in to their banter. A nice change to watch a reality show with no bickering and strategising (so far).

The problem I have is that they’ve put it against two established shows in The Block and MKR. Would like to watch IAC however with the number of episodes each week I don’t think I could keep up with all three!

  2. Worner should be more concerned with his own backyard than “that jungle show” on the opposition that he “never talks about”.
MKR was 700k down on last year’s premiere.

  3. I reckon Seven and and Nine must be scared of Ten, as they would probably never expect Ten to be that competitive early in the year. First was Family Feud and now it’s I Am A Celebrity. What’s next The Project?
@moonserf – why would they delete reality TV shows when they are mainly considered to be a ratings winner.

  4. Excluding the final 3 weeks of the Bachelor last year, most rated around the 500K mark. Ten must be over the moon with IAC!

To that end, most of Ten’s dramas last year were on average close to 25% more successful than the Bachelor (excluding last 3 or so eps).

Ten are over indexed with scripted right?

  5. @wellinmyopinion – “verosity”? If that’s a combination of ferocity and veracity (truth) then you’re right. Worner was prob comparing Monday’s ratings for all 3 shows since they were head to head then: 1,596,000 > 802,000 + 755,000 (but only just).

However, you’d also be right to claim that comparing the launch of one against seconds for the others doesn’t paint an accurate picture, esp as one of them was on two channels.

For Tue 1,401,000 < 739,000 + 685,000 (again, only just). Tonight's ratings will provide a clearer comparison. Even better next week.

  6. Have we forgotten Everybody Dance Now and the final season of The Biggest Loser already?

Im a… was never going to challenge MKR (neither is The Block at the moment) but at least it isn’t rating under 500k.

  7. It all comes down to network standards, I’m a celebrity is doing much worse than celebrity splash, yet IAC would be ‘a hit by tens standards’ where celebrity splash was ‘blunder of the year’ for 7.

  8. It does appear that the knives are out. It also appears that CH7 seems to be a little worried about this ‘Jungle’ show if commenting on it with such verosity is anything to go by.
I don’t actually think that MKR could be ‘bigger than those two shows put together’. Please correct me if I am wrong, but 1.2m (Jungle launch) plus 900k (Block launch) equals 2.1m. MKR lunched with 1.6m. I don’t know where that other 500k has gone. Care to explain Mr Worner?

  9. “We never talk about the opposition but that jungle show looks a bit narrow to us, and a lot of their schedule rides with it,” he said. “No cause to rush them with the cheque book just yet.”

So if you “Never” talk about the oppostion, y’know as in the real meaning of the word “never” why are you talking about the oppostion now and why should anyone believe anything you say?

    Credibility….boom!!!
