Gogglebox weighs in on Bali 9 duo

Gogglebox demonstrates its not all about punchlines, as TV families are moved by a Four Corners hot topic.

IMG_1555Last night’s episode of Gogglebox demonstrated its desire to take the temperature of the nation on hot topics.

After amusing couch views on Family Feud, My Strange Addiction, My Kitchen Rules, ICC Cricket World Cup and a reluctant singalong to the movie Mamma Mia, it featured last week’s Four Corners episode on the campaign to save Bali Nine duo Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

There was some comment on whether capital punishment should be carried out for their crime, but overwhelmingly the opinions were against their execution:

“If they execute these guys you won’t get me back there again.”

“Why couldn’t they arrest them in Australia? Why did they let them do it?”

“If that was my son and he made a mistake, I would be beside myself.”

“I feel very sorry for the parents because they would be going through hell and back.”

“We have no right to take another person’s life.”

“What the did was awful and they need to be punished. But they do not need to die.”

“Two more lives gone. Wasted.”

The episode airs at 9pm tonight on TEN.

  1. The Outback ER segment was heartbreaking to watch. An interesting mix of content this week which really changed the dynamic of the show. On a side note, the ‘cool dad’ needs to tone it down. He’s so unnatural that it messes with the flow of the show.

  2. Compelling stuff (sarcasm) – I couldn’t stand to watch TV with any of these people, all they do is talk over everything. Who cares what you think!!! Shut up and watch the show.

  3. I think it was in extremely poor taste to have them commenting on the Bali 9 case when these men may be facing their death very soon. There is enough media about the case, comments on social media etc, we don’t need it on this show too.

    1. They were just giving their opinions on the case, as everyone else has done. And it’s in keeping with what the show does, presenting opinions on things shown on TV. Which includes news and current affairs stories.

I think in Gogglebox’s case most of them were very respectful about the two men.

  4. I think to a degree you have to suspend disbelief with this show, kind of like when you watch any reality show.
But can I just add David… the most emotional moment of last nights show was not about the Bali Nine executions.. it was about the poor woman whose husband was dieing on Outback ER… literally sobbed my way through the segment. That’s reality TV you can’t fake… and I can’t believe that episode of Outback ER (a show I’ve never heard of) actually was allowed to be filmed. It was too far!

  5. I thought the choices made about what the families watch were a bit strange this week. A Nine News report about cricket (instead of the actual match) and a movie rerun? Would prefer if they stuck to new television programs.

    1. I’m guessing it’s easier to get clearance on including news content than it is including highlights from a sports broadcast as we all know how over protective sport is when it comes to any form of media rights.

  6. It was really obvious last night that none of the families chose to watch any of the pre selected shows. None of them knew the rules of cricket . I love the fat Greek woman who just eats non stop. It’s still laugh out loud funny though

      1. Actually to be fair… who doesn’t sit in the same position of the couch every night?… I always sit on the right. It’s the best spot. Why would I ever sit on the left.. the left side is for the other half!

          1. The youngest always gets the floor – it’s how it is!

People do need to remember though Gogglebox is essentially a TV review show, not a reality show capturing 24/7 what they’re watching on TV. The producers pick out the shows and the participants watch them in recording sessions, not as broadcast.
