Kitty Flanagan, Tom Gleeson join The Weekly with Charlie Pickering

Charlie Pickering's ABC show now has a name and 2 more cast members.

2014-11-12_1438Familiar Project faces Kitty Flanagan and Tom Gleeson will Charlie Pickering for his new ABC series, now titled The Weekly with Charlie Pickering.

Flanagan and Gleeson have both worked with Pickering on the TEN series.

Described as “a news comedy show, tonight show and chat show all in one,” ABC says Pickering will “return to his comedy roots while being a general nuisance to newsmakers, politicians and other charlatans.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to work with two of my best friends who just happen to also be my favourite comedians. Together we can’t wait for The Weekly to help everyone calm down and buy into our revolutionary ‘7-Day News Cycle’. The 24-hour version just doesn’t seem to be working out. Nobody has time to think!” said Pickering.

Adrian Swift, ABC TV Head of Content said: “The news whizzes past us every day but Charlie and his team will catch the absurd, the ridiculous and the under-examined, fillet it and serve it back to us in a way that will make you laugh, occasionally make you angry and always make you think.”

“It’s a thrill to have Charlie back at the ABC where he belongs,” says Head of Entertainment Jon Casimir. “He’s a rare talent, a genuine quadruple threat: smart, funny, caring and handsome … hang on, make that triple threat.”

Tom Gleeson is one of Australia’s most successful stand-up comedians and has appeared at all of the world’s major comedy festivals. He has been nominated three times for the Helpmann Award for Best Comedy. He is a TV regular having appeared on Good News Week, The Project and This Week Live.

Kitty Flanagan is one of Australia’s best known comedians and was nominated for a 2010 Helpmann Award for her hit show Charming & Alarming. For the last five years Kitty was a regular on The Project and often appeared as a guest on Good News Week and Spicks and Specks. She has also performed around the world at various comedy festivals.

The half hour show is due to launch in April.

  1. I don’t mind Tom & Charlie but sorry I won’t be watching since Kitty is part of the show I just find her annoying to watch and not funny at all, I feel like this is a copy of the project..though could be wrong.

  2. Sounds great but I’m not crazy about the name of the show. The Weekly just makes me think of the shorthand name of The Australian Women’s Weekly. Hopefully people don’t start calling it The Weakly.

  3. This sounds a little bit like it might be taking its lead from the UK “10 O’Clock Live” show, with Charlie Brooker and David Mitchell (which I thought may have been inspired by “The 7PM Project” in turn).

  4. I don’t like Mad As Hell either. It seems trapped between The Daily Show and Marx Brothers. Will Charlie try to be our Jon Stewart? John Oliver’s new show is working well in the weekly comedy news format and might make a good model.

  5. This could potentially be good. I like Charlie from The Project. Hopefully better than mad as hell, I’m one of the few on this website that found that show awful
