Mad as Hell keeps ABC happy

Ratings: In his new 8:30 timeslot Shaun Micallef is helping ABC to rebuild their Wednesday nights.

In the new timeslot of 8:30pm Mad as Hell pulled 737,000 viewers last night, just 1,000 less than The Block and well in front of TEN’s Wonderland on 397,000. The show did drop 31,000 from last week but was the second-best performer for ABC last night and helped the network to match its share from last week.

  1. Sooooo annoyed that TEN once again replaced a new White Collar on ONE with a simulcast of IACGMOOH despite the EPG stating that White Collar was scheduled (same tonight with shows like Last Man Standing and Sirens listed and not I’m a Celeb) – that’s despite the article on TV Tonight today citing TEN saying it was important to provide an accurate EPG. It truly is no wonder Australia is the piracy capital of the world when networks treat their viewers like this – delaying the final 4 episodes ever in favour of ratings.

      1. My apologies but I think there is some confusion. When I refer to a TV Tonight article I mean the one on Junctions, where TEN’s programmer states “I think more important than Junctions is accuracy in the information”. Obviously you have no control over programming or EPG’s, I was just making the point that it is completely contradictory to what is meant to be TEN’s main priority for their programming. If anything you’re a miracle worker managing to post all the bumped/update articles that you do.

  2. Perhaps 7 could change their evening line up:
    5:00pm Gameshow
5:30 Today tonight (SA/WA and similar instead of their second half hour of “pretend news”)
    6:00 News
    6:30 Home and Away
    7:00 Reality genre
    8:30 Drama
    9:30 Drama
This would improve the drama opportunities in this country before we are left with none at all, as it is expensive to make and the current returns on advertising will drive networks away from it, unless the product placement becomes more obvious….

Please save daram Channel 7 and not destroy the evenings with too much reality!!

  3. I think Australians have to get used to the 9pm timeslot. Its the norm elsewhere so what is wrong with it here? People just don’t like change do they. I don’t mind the 9pm timeslot personally. Winter and Murder have been effected it seems but people have to adjust to it because its becoming the norm. At least Seven are ending on time and actually starting at 9pm or very close to it. Winter was great last night. The show is getting better as it goes along.

    1. It’s a pity our M rating will not allow shows at 8pm like in the US as well, shows like NCIS etc., show at that time (as in 8/7c), yet we cannot do that here due to rating restrictions. A channel like TEN could cut The Project to a half hour at 6:30pm, then at 7pm have the I’m A Celebrity, Masterchef, Biggest Loser shows leading into 8pm with the likes of NCIS and then the 9pm shows, in the US The Good Wife is 9/8C for instance as is NCIS New Orleans ands Sleepy Hollow).

Of course for that to work the 7pm start shows would have to run on time and that unfortunately is something that is unlikely to happen.

  4. Look at what Ten gets for I’m A Celebrity and then look at Judith Lucy’s numbers. Why 10 don’t develop a line up of 6 part local comedies is beyond me. Yes it’s a lot of work but they’d get launch figures every 6 weeks as people sampled new shows. Plus they’d have some diversity in their line ups and some of them would be hits and could come back for longer runs. They’d be cheaper than these big event series and less risky than commissioning things like Wonderland which appears to be running forever.

  5. So we now have Winter and HTGAWM being affected by late start times. Within a week we can add Downton Abbey and Revenge to this list. I hope Seven are happy with killing off most of their shows in order to get an extra 30 mins of high ratings from MKR. It will be interesting to see what happens if MKR finally loses steam and they’ve decimated the ratings of every other show they have on their schedule

    1. I agree, they are sacrificing their entire lineup and integrity as a network.
Not everybody wants to watch a cooking show and I know the ‘great’ numbers of consistently 1.5-1.7 million do not lie, everything else in the schedule is suffering.

  6. Nine News (1.05m / 1.04m) was best for Seven ???

Watched Home & Away but finding the storyline getting the most publicity totally unbelievable. Would prefer to see more of the storyline about Leah, VJ & Zac and Hannah, Oscar, Evie & Denny. Also watched QI, Mad As Hell which I thought were excellent and the first half hour of I’m a Celebrity … Thank you for posting ratings wraps … always a good read.

      1. You are quite right – the figures are good. What’s disappointing is losing half the lead-in audience, many of whom are just going to bed. The point we are kicking around is how much will the 9PM start time affect ongoing drama figures?

  7. Winter was better this week than last week. Still the body count on the show is ridiculous. First Carly and Paul Pageant die in the first episode. Then the mistress in the second gets shot by a sniper rifle. And now the drug dealing father gets his oxygen ripped away from him and another character gets chased down and struck by a car

I will watch it til the end but I hope they have a good conclusion

I watched an episode of Wonderland for the first time last week, too many characters and only one or two engaging storylines. Not surprised it is rating horribly

    1. Ten has paid for the episodes of Wonderland, it needs to show them in prime-time to make its local drama quota and keep its licence, so it will remain on.

They could move Wonderland to 9:30pm, but that would require something that rates better to replace it. The only possible thing would be Madam Secretary, which returns next month. But they may want to put that on in its regular slot on Thursday where there’s less competition.
