Renewed: Broadchurch

David Tennant and Olivia Colman set to return for a third season of UK mystery series.

2015-02-24_1140UK mystery Broadchurch has been renewed for a third season by ITV.

While there was a drop in ratings for the second season in the UK, consolidated ratings averaged over 9 million viewers.

David Tennant and Olivia Colman will reprise their roles as Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller for the third series.

Creator and writer Chris Chibnall said: “We’ve been overwhelmed that nine million people every week have continued to join us on the twists and turns of Broadchurch. This third chapter has been a glint in my eye for a long time and I’m thrilled to be writing these characters once again.”

ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November today added: “Chris Chibnall knows exactly how to keep viewers guessing and I’m delighted that he is going to take the story onto the next stage.”

Details of other cast members, and filming dates, will be confirmed at a later date.

Season Two is currently airing in Australia on ABC but the US adaptation Gracepoint, also featuring David Tennant, did not proceed to a second season.

  1. Series 2 is utter rubbish and sadly it gets much worse after the second episode. The show lost half its original audience by the mid point and was thrashed in the ratings in the UK by Silent Witness each week. The announcement of the third series was met with howls of derision in the UK after the savaging the show has received by critics and disgruntled viewers. If you enjoyed series one, I’d strongly suggest abandoning the show now. It really gets much sillier and much much more poorly written and acted. Don’t waste your time on this nonsense – just get your series one boxset out, forget this exists and enjoy that!

  2. Like many others I don’t understand why Broadchurch wasn’t kept as a mini series, it was great as a standalone entity. I have enjoyed the second series (I’m only up to episode 6 though) but not nearly as much as the first one simply because series 2 was unnecessary. I’m surprised because the Brits are usually good with not needlessly prolonging series – I would expect it from an Aus network though! Then to now be doing a third season is a very questionable creative choice. I’ll still watch as I love David Tennant, Olivia Colman and Charlotte Rampling but it will be a grudge viewing!

  3. I loved series 1 of this show and its mastery of the melodrama, which is part of the genre. But it also had authenticity. Series 2 in contrast is a huge disappointment and lacking any credibility. So the prosecution has to bring Charlotte Rampling out of retirement to prosecute this case… yeah right, that’s always happening in the UK. Really dumb stuff from people who have displayed just how good they can be. Please no 3rd series.

  4. Gracepoint, an American version of Broadchurch, probably more like a poor imitation! What’s wrong with the Yanks? Can’t they come up with their own ideas instead of knicking ideas from England(Broadchurch) and Australia(The Slap)?

  5. I don’t get why people are saying S2 is any different than S1. S1 was full of the same silly melodrama — the fuss over naming a murder victim after the family had been notified; the hounding of a falsely accused suspect to death. The police procedures and actions never made sense, nor did the plot or the confession. What it did have was a novel setting, some interesting characters, innumerable red herrings providing a bit of mystery.

The change is just that after the red herrings have been eliminated and the one remaining towns person arrested there is less mystery than before.

  6. I really wish they’d kept this as a one off series. As a huge fan of the first series, my anticipation for this second series was at fever pitch. I’ve just found the whole thing utterly disappointing. The court case at the centre of the second series has been excruciating to watch and completely unrealistic. And I really wish the Sandbrook case was more interesting than it is. I’d love for them to come back with a brilliant third series, but I’m really not holding my breath.

    1. Yes, same here.
Some of the plotline of Season 2 is totally OTT and unbelievable.
HIding the witness away for months in the village, then moving her to the female policewoman’s house and then arranging a meeting with the suspect seems ridicolous and was never going to end well.
Still very atmospheric and of course a wonderful setting.
