Renewed: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

We can now rule out any notion of John Oliver taking over from Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.

HBO has renewed Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, effectively putting an end to rumours he may replace Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.

The announcement comes three days after his late-night chat show won the Writers Guild of America award for best comedy/variety series.

The new HBO deal means Oliver will present 35 episodes of Last Week Tonight per year in 2016 and 2017.

Oliver launched Last Week Tonight in 2014 after seven years as one of Stewart’s sidekicks.

But he also has a suggestion as to who, or what, could replace Jon Stewart, telling Jimmy Fallon, “How about Hologram Jon? Because he’s said almost every word in the English language.

“If you can put Oliver Reed in a film that he wasn’t in, surely you can just have Hologram Jon, like Tupac, hosting the show every night.”

Last Week Tonight airs in Australia on Comedy.

  1. Oliver would be crazy to leave his own show on HBO to return to Comedy Central. His show is ground-breaking, with each edition generating massive media coverage each week.

  2. Ratings this season have been well down on HBO, although largely because HBO’s Sunday night lineup is so weak at the moment. Looking, which airs before it, is doing shockingly bad numbers. IMO, Last Week Tonight does damn well to climb back up again.
