Returning: Lateline

More investigations, less news. Lateline set to premiere on ABC News 24 with a replay on ABC.

2015-02-19_1142ABC’s Lateline returns to air on Monday March 9 with “a refreshed format and at a more accessible time.”

Hosted by Emma Alberici and Tony Jones, and marking its 25th anniversary this year, it will air on ABC News 24 at 9:30pm AEDT and again on ABC TV at 10:30pm (local time).

The changes follow an overhaul last year amid funding cuts for the broadcaster.

Described as having “a more flexible format” it will feature interviews, stories and investigations, with less of its news bulletin element.

ABC Director of News Kate Torney said: “Lateline represents a commitment to in-depth analysis and current affairs on News 24 in the evenings.

“It will have more time for longer investigative items, the ability to tackle stories from more diverse angles, and our interviews with politicians and industry and community leaders will be extended, allowing us to advance the news agenda and dig deeper.”

Head of Current Affairs Bruce Belsham and EP Lisa Whitby, said, “We are very appreciative of all the hard work Lateline staff have put into the relaunch and we are excited by its imminent return.”

Tony Jones said, “With a rich broadcasting history of 25 years Lateline remains essential viewing and we’ll be reaching an even broader audience through increased engagement with social media.”

Emma Alberici added, “We also want to hear viewers’ thoughts on the stories making news and the issues that matter to them.”

Lateline will air live Monday to Friday on ABC News 24 at:

9:30pm NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS
9:00pm SA
8:30pm QLD
8:00pm NT
6:30pm WA

  1. This is what TT/ACA would like to think they are, but are a billion tacky miles away from. Still think I’d prefer the old style but let’s give the refresh a shot.

    1. ABC News have posted a clip on Soundcloud with the new theme music. Pretty much the same, but slightly different. I’d post a link, but Dave has a no link policy, so you’ll have to do an Internet search for it. Or watch it tonight.

  2. About time!!
Will they go live again when it repeats on ABC1 when there is breaking news?
One of the strengths of Lateline was its ability to cover breaking news as it happens.
Lateline should be airing at 10pm if on News24, so as to give the program some flexibility, being restricted to 28 minutes at the end will make it looked rushed. The 10pm program The World should revert back to the 9pm – 10pm slot.

  3. This is one of the more bizarre situations that the ABC have made, unless I’m missing something obvious.

At 9:30pm Monday AEDT is the live simulcast of Q&A. So viewers in AEDT are most likely to watch Q&A live on ABC TV and then Lateline delayed. Viewers outside AEDT on the other hand have no way to watch Q&A live on TV which basically means they can’t be part of the conversation (unless they listen to it on ABC NewsRadio).

This also means the The Drum encores are out. Not too said to those gone.

    1. Not sure what the situation will be on Mondays – perhaps retain the simulcast of Q&A then do Lateline afterwards as a simulcast across 24 and ABC1?

Agree it would be a shame to lose the Q&A simulcast.

    2. Tony Jones confirmed tonight that Q&A won’t be shown live on ABC News 24 anymore. It will be available live on iView though. If only they could sort out their buffering issue with using a Chromecast via a smart phone on the iView app…
