Seven gets away with Murder as MKR dominates

Ratings: Seven's double of Reality & Drama dominates Tuesday viewing -while TEN is facing increasing problems.

2015-02-11_1021My Kitchen Rules eliminated their first contestants for 2015 last night and as a result scored their biggest audience so far this year, at 1.73m viewers.

It was a million viewers in front of the competition: The Block (742,000) and I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! (581,000 in a simulcast with ONE). It means the gap is widening between the 3 way battle for Reality TV fans.

Together with the premiere of How to Get Away with Murder Seven comfortably won Tuesday night.

Seven network won with 33.1% then Nine 28.6%, TEN 18.1%, ABC 15.8% and SBS 4.4%.

How to Get Away with Murder debuted at 1.09m for Seven followed by Seven News (965,000 / 912,000), Home and Away (891,000), Million Dollar Minute (449,000) and Grey’s Anatomy (376,000).

A new Big Bang Theory episode was best for Nine at 1.1m (rpt: 497,000) then Nine News (1.00m / 989,000), A Current Affair (839,000), The Block (742,000) and Hot Seat (538,000). A House of Hancock replay was 265,000.

TEN had a poor night unable to rise above TEN Eyewitness News (592,000). I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! hit a new first-run low -fourth in its slot  despite a simulcast- then The Project (562,000 / 452,000), NCIS (549,000), NCIS: LA (455,000 / 311,000).

ABC News (849,000) led ABC then 7:30 (715,000), Catalyst (652,000), Fake or Fortune? (461,000), Antiques Roadshow (341,000) and My Last Summer (222,000).

On SBS ONE it was Who Do You Think You Are? (192,000), SBS World News (136,000), Best of Insight (131,000) and Best of Dateline (121,000).

7TWO’s Highway Patrol (251,000) led multichannels.

The Morning Show: 158,000 / 81,000

  1. I find there is not much appealing to me on offer since the Ratings period has resumed!
Maybe I am underwhelmed by the barrage of adverts and genres!
I have only watched existing shows like Greys and 7 two or ABC shows like Dr Blake

  2. I’ve given up on Im a Celebrity. It needs to be more than just tucker trials to justify a nightly commitment. We hardly see any camp dynamics and the shows are far too padded out. In my opinion the celebrities camping in the jungle add nothing to the show. They could just make this a once a week game show with celebrity guests doing those challenges.

  3. I must admit I hardly watch MKR because I hate it I and a lot friends do not watch it so the ones with the ratings boxes must be all watching. With IAC cut the show in half and start it at 7.00 pm. But hey what would I know, I was in TV many years ago and programmed a movie cinema for a few years.

  4. Last week One rated 144K between 7:30 to 8:30 – so subtract this from 580K Celebrity rated across the two channels last night and you get an indication that it rated around 450K on TEN.

    1. No. It is more likely the case that 144,000 people who would have watched their regular programming on ONE last night would have been annoyed and gone elsewhere while the same number of people watch Celebrity whether it is on Ten only, two channels or three channels.

Ten as a network loses these 144,000 for that hour – as do any network that simulcasts on multis – they lose the audience that are tuning into the multis for alternative programming and realistically would not be gaining the number of viewers who would normally tune into multis for alternative programming as part of the simulcast ratings.

I challenge the networks or anyone to prove otherwise.

      1. Furthermore the ONE share for last night was 1.8% – it would have been more like 2.5 or so with alternative programming and there is certainly no gain in TEN’s share when you compare last week to this week – in fact it is down as is the network as a whole. Both Ten and ONE are down, ELEVEN is up 0.5% – maybe some of those ONE viewers went to ELEVEN instead but overall, the network loses out.

        1. I agree, it’s a dumb move by TEN. While it makes the ratings for Celebrity look a little higher, the network actually drops overall share and therefore drops revenue. TEN can try to inflate the Celebrity ratings as much as they want, but it can’t change the fact that Celebrity has been a very expensive flop!

  5. I really enjoyed HTGAWM, the first episode was very entertaining. As the series progresses, it’s important not to apply logic as much of the content defies it but hey, it’s a great ride. I’m not sure how the roast chicken audience will deal with the gay sex scenes every week.

  6. I haven’t watched the full ep of how to get away with murder as yet but for the 1/2 an ep I’ve watched so far its just ok nothing special. I’ll probably give it a few eps but it doesn’t seem to live up to the hype.

  7. I expected a bit higher for How To Get Away With Murder but like someone else has said it now puts the drama ratings on par with the Australian dramas. So 1.1m is the new norm for success now with dramas? MKR is awesome this season. Seven has done it again with brilliant casting and last night i was kinda shocked at the elimination. I expected it to be Annie and Lloyd.

      1. Agree with you there. when Revenge premiered it got over 2 million viewers at 8:30. Supprised that murder wasn’t higher but didn’t expect it too high at 9:00

        1. As people have stated before: 7 dint value dramas as much as their revered reality shows! I also believe the dramas would rate higher if they start at 8:30!
All dramas seem to suffer a later time slot! Time shifting would be interesting… To see how all have fared!

  8. I hope ICA adds more challenges for the camp, get them outside a bit. After a while, sitting in camp and watching them eat or sleep does get a little same old. Especially more physical challenges in the Tucker Trials.

    1. For sure.
Quite like ICA but it does drag in the middle whilst they’re waiting to do challenges.
Yes, they definitely need to be doing more rather than just siting/lying around waiting for the next challenge.

  9. I’m a Celebrity was simulcast on One last night so the real rating on TEN was actually around 450K – this is an important fact when comparing the various program’s ratings. MKR is doing a brilliant job, again!

  10. I think the How to Get Away with Murder figures puts the Gallipoli figures in context as well – that is as strong as prime time drama can expect in the 2015 universe.

    1. I’m not sure these days overseas drama premiers can compare to Australian drama premiers. When an Australian drama premiers here its a true premier but overseas dramas premiers elsewhere sometimes months beforehand and how to get away was not fast tracked.

  11. As I have said previously I like Celebrity – however, it does get a little boring. Once the fun of seeing them do gross things wears off there isnt anything else!!! You could easily pull this into a 30 min show but it drags for 90. Murder was really good! Enjoyed it !!!

  12. I am really enjoying I’m a Celebrity too, and a great alternative to the awful MKR. Can’t tell you how much I detest MKR and pretty much everything else on 7, so I’m a Celeb is a much needed alternative. I think the majority in this country have lost their remotes with the channel stuck on brain dead 7!

    1. I’m with you Jengo about MKR. Truly awful and its huge ratings are surely a testament to Australians’ poor taste! LOL! MKR is overhyped, overheated and overdone. And one of the judges is seriously annoying (not the French one)!

  13. I’m enjoying I’m A Celebrity, just unfortunate that people with ratings boxes seem to prefer MKR.
Do 9 bite the bullet and put Big Bang on at 7.30 instead of The Block or hold back on the new eps of Big Bang completely until they can use them to better advantage?

  14. Really enjoying I’m a Celebrity (somewhat reminds me of the time when 10 had Big Brother – especially with the live streaming they both offered too) apart from the voters thinking it’s funny to constantly pick on Laura. Bit over that -she’s shown she can do the trials now so I hope Andrew and Tyson, the only two who haven’t stepped foot in one are next.

As for what the ratings say, bit of a bummer that so many are shown to be watching MKR, when things like I’m a Celebrity has live elements from over in another country. Just watch old MKR later while watch new live shows actually live.

    1. Totally agree. Such a shame its not rating stronger. I thoroughly enjoy each episode – but perhaps the episodes should be shorter and straighter to the point? And leave the filler for online?

    2. Only live in 2 states and then only some bits. Plus, most of the time you wouldn’t know it was being filmed in a different country let alone S Africa.

I think entertainment value is far more important and clearly a lot more people find the hyped up cooking comp to be more interesting than watching some demi-celebs do yet another Fear Factor stunt to get some food.
