SBS will replay The Life & Times of Malcolm Fraser at 10:10pm. A Dateline special is now out.

First aired on SBS in 2004, this documentary explores the evolution of Fraser the man and unravels the truth behind the public myth.

Malcolm Fraser served as Australia’s prime minister from 1975 to 1983, and was an integral, and often controversial, part of Australia’s political history, elected after the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor government in November 1975.

The documentary offers a portrait of Malcolm Fraser’s childhood, education and family life, revealing the man behind the politician. It explores his entry into politics, his time as a backbencher in the government of Robert Menzies and the portfolios he held in the governments of Harold Holt, John Gorton and William McMahon.

Fraser reflects on his political victories and opponents, the dramatic events surrounding the dismissal of the Whitlam government and his sharp, right wing, conservative reputation.

The Life & Times of Malcolm Fraser is a challenging documentary, offering a complex portrait of one of Australia’s most significant prime ministers.

Sunday, 22 March at 10.10pm on SBS ONE.

  1. I just like to say on record that I count Fraser as the 27th Prime Minister not the 22nd.

I do not agree with the National Archives to count PMs as individuals instead of separate periods in office.

The office of Prime Minister should be about the continuity of governance not about the individuals who occupy it.

It is like a birthday party, the count goes on continuously and should not be delayed because one birthday looks exactly the same as a previous one, the analogy here applying to Deakin, Fisher, Menzies and Rudd.
