SPOILER: Homeland is about to do a Desperate Housewives, by fast-forwarding several years and even relocating its central character, Carrie Mathison.

Speaking at the annual PaleyFest event in the US, where writers and cast speak to media, co-creator Alex Gansa signalled major changes.

“I think we’re going to do a big time jump — two, two-and-a-half years from where we ended season four,” he said. “The story will be set in Germany, in Berlin… We have our fingers crossed we’ll shoot in Berlin…[in that time Carrie will] be trying to come to terms with her life in the Central Intelligence Agency [and] dealing with what she felt at the very end of season four, which is disillusionment and disdain about it. So she’ll actually be out of the agency.”

Executive producer Meredith Stiehm added, “[Berlin is] a really interesting city because of its past, and its need to make up for its sins. And I think Carrie’s going to be in that place because of last season and all she’s done. She’s going to feel the need to atone.”

Writers had debated what the time shift means for Carrie’s relationship with Quinn (Rupert Friend).

“Those are the big questions! I’d like to save those as a surprise,” said Gansa.

Desperate Housewives also made a permanent time leap in Season Five and it reinvigorated the show through to Season 8.

  1. @Trev, I have liked Homeland from Day 1, if Channel channel 10 or any other channel does not pick it up I will be very annoyed as it is by far one of the best things Free to Air has to offer. I think Ch10 will have it on but probably dump it at half 10 or half 9.

  2. Last season was very good I thought, apart from the final episode which was blah. I know it doesn’t rate that well but I’m glad ratings alone don’t determine what we see here. Kind of a blessing it’s on Ten, actually, since 7 and 9 would have dumped it. Not sure about the time jump but the shift to a European setting is intriguing.

  3. I understand why the Yanks would keep this turkey going, but surely there are no plans to show it here in Oz.
It should have been axed over two years ago as local audiences obviously were rfed up with it. Sure, it may have had a small cult following but no where near large enough to attract the advertisers. The same applies to the underwatched ‘The Good Wife’. Nothing really wrong with the show, except very few are interested in watching it locally.

  4. Homeland is the time of show that could pull of a time jump and still make compelling TV, and avoid the ‘jump the shark’ negativity like Housewives which is solely locked to a location and characters.

  5. Hopefully it doesn’t do a parks and recreation which leap frogged to 2017. Series 7 was ordinary, except for the double episode show finale.
