This week on Inside Story Jayne Azzopardi looks at “Forgiving the Unforgiveable,” talking to people who found it within themselves to forgive those who had murdered a family member.

This episode airs in select cities, please check guides.

How could you forgive a person who murdered a family member, someone you love more than anyone in the world?

In this episode, you’ll meet two extraordinary people who have done just that. And when you discover just how horrific, how pre-mediated, these murders were, it beggars belief that these people could ever forgive.

In Perth, June Van Smaalen says she has love and compassion for the man who murdered her daughter, Corinne. That man was her son-in-law, Dimitrios Tsakiris.

In the US, a crime just as inexplicable, and the reaction of the man dealing with it, equally perplexing. Kent Whitaker narrowly survived a massacre that claimed the life of his wife and his youngest boy. Shockingly, he discovers the person who ordered the execution was his eldest boy, Bart.

Jayne Azzopardi speaks to Kent Whitaker about how he was able to forgive the unforgivable.

And she visits Bart Whitaker on Death Row to ask him why he wanted to kill his family and how he is able to maintain an on-going relationship with his incredibly forgiving father.

Thursday March 12 at 8.30pm on Nine.
