Kerri-Anne: Pen still mightier than the sword

"I broke my own cardinal rule." A TV survivor learned the hard way about responding to media criticism.

She’s a TV survivor and she’s learned many a hard lesson about the industry along the way.

But even Kerri-Anne Kennerley ignored her own best advice when she once responded to media criticism.

Breakfast TV and News presenters seem to be particularly susceptible to commentary in the media, for their appearance, opinions and private lives. But do females cop the brunt of female commentators more than men?

“I prefer not to think of it as female to female,” KAK recently told TV Tonight. “But if a male ever did it, it would probably look so sexist and macho. But a journalist will, I guess on regular occasion be very mean to somebody.

“I always look at criticism as “Where does it come?’ That’s always been my benchmark.

“If somebody is going to criticise somebody I look at what agenda do they have? If it’s somebody I respect I think ‘Ok did they have a point there?’

“But if it’s somebody I don’t respect and their opinion means nothing, then it’s literally into the rubbish bin.”

So how can personalities respond to media criticism -or should they?

Despite her accrued wisdom and good humour, even KAK admits she broke her own rule on one occasion.

“If you ever respond, you will be eaten alive. The pen is mightier than the sword. I did it once and I broke my own rule and I was sorry I did it. My husband told me not to do it and I waited 6 months. I was even angrier 6 months later and I broke my own cardinal rule, which was really silly, and I’m sorry I did,” she says.

“I knew the lesson. I just didn’t listen to it!”

  1. Absolutely agree with everyone else: Kerri-Anne definitely deserves the HOF at the Logies this year. 48yrs in the industry, a child of the medium, and would likely have one of the greatest speeches in Logies history if inducted. People will watch for a KAK induction: especially if promoted beforehand.

  2. KAK should be the one getting inducted in to the Hall Of Fame not home and away, I don’t think there is anyone on Australia Tv who has bounced back on top after a show ending, even her bounce back from cancer was amazing.
