Larry Emdur on Sam Armytage rumours: “I don’t know where this stuff’s coming from.”

Larry Emdur goes in to bat for Sam Armytage, under fire for supposed diva antics. "There are people there who behave much worse."

For reasons known only to print editors, females in the media industry and small puppies, stories with Samantha Armytage in them make for good headlines in a way that male personalities seemingly do not.

Behind the scenes dramas of Television, particularly those concerning the competitive Breakfast Television landscape, may fascinate many observers -but it’s possible they risk outnumbering the audience.

The latest stories surrounding Armytage have suggested differences with make-up artist (and Dancing with Stars performer) Eliza Campagna.

News Corp reports an HR complaint against Armytage was lodged after Campagna was allegedly “manhandled” on the Sunrise set over summer. Seven Network’s Director of TV Operations David Porter attributed the exchange as, “Eliza was about to walk into a live shot so Sam put her hand out to stop her. In live TV, this kind of thing happens all the time.”

Armytage also disputed the allegations, noting: “This is total rubbish,” she said in a statement. “I have a really long history with Eliza. We’ve been mates for many years and she’s in a league of her own. She’s a miracle worker! You should see me without make-up.”

Earlier this week The Australian suggested internal machinations were being leaked from within Seven and management had instigated an investigation, going as far as to suggest someone could be dismissed as a result.

That was enough for A Current Affair to speculate with a colour piece “Knives are out for breakfast TV host” last night but stopped short of naming names.

This morning Larry Emdur also weighed in on the events, defending Armytage to Sydney’s Triple M Grill Team.

“Guys I’ve been in this business for 30 years now and I can say, hand on heart, Sam’s one of the good ones. I don’t know where this stuff’s coming from,” he said.

“I would never name names or tell stories or anything like that but there are people there who behave much worse.

“Sam’s one of the good ones.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with Sam, socially and professionally and she is a great girl. I don’t know where this is (coming from).”

Last year TV Tonight quizzed Armytage on whether such stories were part of the price of having a profile network role.

“With the job I do I’m a pretty open book. There’s a lot of stuff I share. But in my private life you don’t want to share everything,” she said.

“So if it’s worth commenting on, I’ll comment on it. But I have an up and down relationship (with media) where sometimes it’s welcome and sometimes it’s not.

“A lot of it is rubbish, but there are so many pages to fill on the internet these days, if they don’t write rubbish, what else are they going to write about? But you know… that’s the beast that it is!”

  1. “There are people there who behave much worse.” Hardly exonerating his friend there. Worse than what? I’ve worked in television, although not for commerical tv, but why is it seemingly a given that people misbehave in this industry?

    1. I think because it’s so ruddy hard to crack the industry that the ego can become overblown [in some]. Of course there is also the issue of oh-so-fragile self esteem. Not hearing that applause or that validity from social media. Feeling the need to keep the head high in the face of a series disaster etc and so forth.

  2. Think Jezza might be getting mixed up with David. H. Koch, the businessman, he is worth around 43 US billion not the David Koch from Sunrise, and why are channels always trying to find the negative side to other channels and there employees, does it really matter, and are views really interested what goes on behind the scenes. Such pettiness, makes you wonder what the people in charge are really like, wish they would all grow up.

  3. I didn’t realise that David Koch is one of the wealthiest blokes in the world according to the latest rich list from Forbes. He comes in 7th with a fortune of 42.9 billion US dollars. This brekkie show is clearly a good gig

  4. Larry has to support her, a bit like Malcolm supporting Tony.
Sam is just not a good interviewer. Her interview this morning with the head of Aust Post was weak. She is always giggling during interviews. Even Rod Stewart commented on this.. this morning.
I lost all respect fro her when she poured sauce over Kochie, because he splashed some food onto her dress during a cooking segment…an accident. I think she is shallow and vacuous. She is always complaining.
I love it when Nat is the co host. She is so direct and her interviews are so much better. Nat in, Sam out and
    Hermione Kitson as the newsreader.
    Michael Pell shoes some balls.

  5. I am confused at the suggestion that “behind the scenes dramas” may wind up “outnumbering the audience”. Re SA, her face on Dancing With the Stars was pursed regularly enough to suggest she might not be the easiest to get along with, or indeed, to criticise. But these friends of friends who hop up and are so ready to defend are, after all, in the same circle. It doesn’t have much meaning really.

  6. I love how the ACA webpage says “Seven executives have reportedly launched an internal investigation into which network rivals are behind false stories about the star.”
I’d hazard a guess that Nine, with their excessive coverage of this, may have something to do with this…

  7. I feel like they are protesting too much. Sam may be the loveliest person to Larry who is also “talent” and on a lot of money but she may think the crew and assistance aren’t worth talking to? It could be this makeup womans delusion over her thinking Sam was her friend when it was a working relationship and its just gone to the AVO stage.

  8. I have a couple of questions….
1.What are small puppies? the ones that jump up and down and yap a lot?
    2. Can Larry please dish all the dirt on the ‘bad ones’?

    cheers
