Legendary actress Maggie Smith is flagging a departure from Downton Abbey next season, regardless of whether the show finishes up or not.
“They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on,” she told the Sunday Times.
“I mean, I certainly can’t keep going. To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We’re into the late 1920s.”
Smith, who is currently appearing in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, opposite Judi Dench, Richard Gere and Bill Nighy, laments the price of fame that has come with the TV hit.
“One isn’t safe after doing Downton. What’s sad is I’ve gone through my whole life without any of that. I could go round galleries and things on my own and I just can’t do it now. If someone decides to get at you, you can’t get away,” she said.
Ratings for the fifth season in Australia last night attracted 774,000 viewers but the previous week’s episode scored another 261,000 Timeshifted viewers.

Definitely will not be the same without her. She always has the best line of each episode! 🙂
Ditto … she’s an absolute joy to watch. In anything.
I love seeing Maggie in this show. Long may the Dowager reign!
It just wouldn’t be the same without Maggie.
Not worth making the show if Maggie isn’t on it!
