Nine Perth refutes latest claims in ‘logo-gate’

Nine's David Mott says claims about its views on rival broadcaster logos were made when WIN was running the station.

Nine Perth managing director David Mott has hit back over claims that Nine had taken a stance objecting to logos of a rival broadcaster during local football negotiations in 2013.

He told Perth Now the WAFC “were referring to when WIN owned the station before I was appointed” (he was appointed in September 2013).

He said he had called the WAFC in 2013 to discuss the rights and “mentioned Nine were extremely keen to discuss rights and would inject cash”.

But the WAFC told him in 2014 a decision had been made to go with Seven.

The stand-off over Seven refusing to screen West Perth games due to a Nine logo on the guernseys now has WA politicians weighing in while Sam Newman added, “What will happen is lack of sponsorship will drive clubs that are struggling and need money away and put them in dire straits. And Seven can put that feather in their cap.”

Seven declined to comment.

  1. It’s just pathetic. Firstly agree with chivasssimo – it suggests 7 has no confidence in their own news – as if anybody decides what news to watch based on a logo on a shirt.

Here in the UK we’ve had a similar situation in the multi-billion pound battle between Sky Sports and BT Sports where Sky snapped up rights to the Pro 12 so BT went round signing as many sponsorship deals as they could and are shirt sponsors for 5 teams and have stadium naming rights for a sixth.

  2. Channel Nine’s behaviour is appalling and disgusting, sponsoring a local football team that a rival television station has paid huge sums for the broadcast rights. Glad that the team won’t be featured on tv.

  3. If 7 had any confidence in their news bulletin, then they wouldn’t care. Glad to see support of the sport is at the top of everyone’s priorities…not!

  4. Ah, it’s all WIN’s fault! Not a good look to be dumping on your regional partner which has done so much to promote your programs over the years.
