Jeremy Clarkson is to be sacked as Top Gear presenter after a BBC investigation concluded he did attack a producer on the programme, according to British media.

But the BBC will continue to broadcast Top Gear.

Lord Hall, the Director General of the BBC, is expected to announce his decision today after considering the findings of an internal investigation.

Clarkson, 54, will be thanked for his work on the hugely popular motoring show, but will be told such behaviour cannot be tolerated at the Corporation.

The Telegraph reports a BBC inquiry concluded Clarkson spent 20 minutes verbally abusing producer Oisin Tymon, before launching a 30 second physical assault on him.

Last night Clarkson told reporters he hadn’t heard from the BBC.

“Nothing. Not a sausage,” he said, “So I’m really sorry but I don’t think you’re going to find anything out today.”

Radio 2 Breakfast Show host Chris Evans is tipped to replace Clarkson in a revamped Top Gear, but it’s unclear whether James May and Richard Hammond will remain with the programme.

BBC this week cancelled a Top Gear Live event due next month in Norway, but the fate of an event scheduled in Sydney next month remains unclear. There is speculation it would continue contractually with May and Hammond.

  1. What a difference a word makes. I read the summary on the main page as ‘…Clarkson attacked a producer and set fire to him’! That was my brief wtf moment for today.

I agree with SusanP, if Clarkson did assault someone, the BBC has a duty of care to its staff, and has little choice, esp as thay had already publicly said that he was on his last warning.

Look on the bright side, if he (and, hopefully hammond and May) does start another show with another network, hopefully SBS will pick it up and we can watch the episodes start at the advertised time in their correct order and without extraneous specials inserted between them.

  2. bagged and Craig…do you think the BBC wanted to make this decision (if indeed that’s what they have done?). Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. If it is found that physical abuse did indeed occur, what would you have done as head of the BBC given you have legal responsibility and duty of care? It is a true crying shame that the show may be threatened but, once again, if he did hit someone, blame Clarkson. As head of the BBC all you want is profitable series and happy advertisers. This whole shebang will be breaking their (BBC execs that is) hearts.

  3. They can watch their ratings and profits drop like a stone whilst they continue it without the chemistry of the hosts which IMO is one of the main draws. Meanwhile no doubt Clarkson will land on his feet with another network. There were reports in January of the three renewing for another 3 years with the BBC as their current contracts expire in April. Hopefully May & Hammond hadn’t signed those, but who knows.

  4. I really hope after their contract is up that May and Hammon leave Top Gear behind and join Clarkson in what ever project they decided to do.

This is a sad ending to a once great show.

    1. Well I hope that May and Hammond leave Clarkson behind and realise that they are better off not being dragged down by his poor behaviour. **shrugs**

      One can only hope.

  5. So the great BBC which employed and never sacked sex offender Stuart Hall and reknowned pedo Jimmy Saville are gonna sack JC for a bit of a bust up. Against this historical backdrop it says it all.
