MTV series Catfish: The TV Show returns this month where young couples take their online romances into the real world and attempt to meet in person for the very first time, often with disturbing results.

Co-hosted by Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, the series is based on the 2010 film Catfish, directed by Henry Joost and Nev’s older brother Ariel Schulman. The film follows Nev as he builds a relationship with a young woman called ‘Megan’ through Facebook.

After discovering that not all the facts in Megan’s story quite add up, Ariel convinces his younger brother to travel from the pair’s home in New York City to Gladstone, Michigan to confront her directly but when they arrive, they quickly learn that Megan’s mother Angela was the one behind the screen the whole time and that Megan doesn’t in fact exist.

The phrase ‘Catfish’ was born out of a conversation with Angela’s husband Vince shortly after it was revealed that Megan wasn’t real. Vince explained that when live cod were shipped from Alaska to China, the fish’s inactivity in their tanks over the long journey resulted in mushy, tasteless flesh, but fishermen discovered that putting catfish in the tanks with the cod kept them active, ensuring the fish stayed at a high quality.

Vince suggested there are “people who are Catfish in life”, who are around to always keep us on our toes, implying that Angela is one of those people. Vince went on to famously claim he “thanks God for the catfish because we would be boring and dull if we didn’t have somebody nipping at our fin.”

8:30pm Tuesday March 24 on MTV.
