Seven has secured the Paralympic Games in Rio 2016, adding to its Olympic Games suite.

Seven’s agreement with the Australian Paralympic Committee includes broadcast television, subscription television, online, Hybrid Broadband Broadcast Television and radio broadcasting rights across multiple devices.

Seven will screen 14 hours a day of live coverage on broadcast television across the network’s digital broadcast platform.

Kerry Stokes, Chairman of Seven West Media, said: “We are honoured to be the network of the Paralympic Games in Rio. We are proud of our long partnership with the IOC and the Olympic movement, and we look forward to our partnership with the International Paralympic Committee and the Australian Paralympic Committee.

Tim Worner, CEO of Seven West Media, added: “We are delighted to be able to bring this extraordinary event to all Australians. The Paralympic Games take sports to a new level, they inspire and we take with great pride our responsibility to provide the Games to all Australians across all forms of delivery platforms.”

Glenn Tasker, Chairman of the Australian Paralympic Committee, said: “This is an historic day for the Australian Paralympic movement. We are very proud to welcome the Seven Network as our first ever commercial broadcast partner for the Paralympic Games and we are equally excited about the opportunity we now have to share the stories of Australia’s Paralympic athletes.

“The APC is confident that the quality and depth of Paralympic coverage provided by the Seven Network will set a new standard for the Paralympic movement, not just during the 12 days of competition, but for the 18 months leading up to the Games. The Seven Network has embraced the Paralympic ideals and we will do everything we can to ensure our new partnership plays an important role in shaping community perceptions of people with disabilities.”

Previously the Paralympics were screened in Australia on ABC.

Mark Scott, ABC managing director, said, “The ABC is proud of the role we have played in growing a strong audience for the Paralympic Games so there is genuine competition from the commercial networks and money to broadcast them.

“We are sorry to see them go but we wish the games and its athletes well for Rio and beyond.”

  1. Wow. 14 hours Live daily. Seven have really stepped it up. Showing the other networks how sport is meant to be done. If only we could now get everything in HD.

  2. As the ABC no longer believes in HD, the Paralympics may now have a chance of being screened in HD again. When the ABC had a HD simulcast channel of the main channel, the 2008 Paralympics was the only time that event was broadcast in native HD as a separate simulcast with ABC2. After ABCHD was closed down in 2010, the last Paralympics in 2012 were only screened in SD across ABC1 and ABC2 whilst ABCNews24 which occupies the former ABCHD was as usual wasted with up-converted SD news programming. The ABC deserves to lose the rights, and truth be told, they are most likely thankful they have.

  3. “network’s digital broadcast platform” i.e not on free-to-air? this would be ideal for 7TWO with full coverage. I really enjoyed the ABC/ABC2 coverage, more goalball coverage please!!! That sport is amazing!

  4. I will give a moment of kudos to citizen Paul Brown who has advocated to save the Pararoos who lost their funding. His determination and support from others lead to a rescue from the Football Federation of Australia. Go our Paralympic Team and thanks to people like Paul who ensure longevity of individual teams within their banner.
