Sydney too expensive for The Block says Scott Cam

Fines, council and police send Sydney filming prices skyhigh, but in Melbourne, "They look after us."

Sydney councils appear to have priced themselves out of the market when it comes to filming The Block.

Host Scott Cam has told 2DayFM’s Dan and Maz,”I’d like to see it come back to Sydney too but the fact is -and I don’t like to say this- but the Councils in Sydney are too hard on us.”

Sydney has not hosted a series since 2013, with Melbourne expected to host yet another season later this year.

Cam said the show brings some $20 million into the local economy.

“For example the police charged us $30,000 for crowd control. Victoria Police charge us nothing. Councils in Sydney fined us five times for soil on the footpath and stuff like that. Melbourne, we don’t get fined at all, they look after us.

“We do bring a lot of money into the economy and the Victorian government gets that and they say ‘What do you need? Welcome back.”

Last year Executive Producer Justin Sturzaker told TV Tonight it was important with the investment made they can sell those properties again quickly and that buildings had distinct character.

“Melbourne has a lot of those buildings and opportunities that present themselves –more than other parts of the country,” he said.

While South Yarra’s Triple Threat isn’t exactly a building “of character” it does sound like cost is the overriding factor.

  1. Now us Sydney folk know what it’s like to be Jamie Durie… Oh well, we’ll just have to do some serious mirror time checking out our sweet abs to help us get over it…

    1. Yes I’m quite glad that the Sydney councils and government are strict in these aspects! What an idiot Scott Cam is if he thinks people should be able to pollute, etc just because it is a TV show. Self entitled much? My friend lived on the street where they filmed the first series in Sydney and it was an absolute nightmare, so much noise and people everywhere, no regard for the actual residents.

  2. this is off topic a little bit.but we were in nz on hols a couple of years ago and say the nz version of the block and they were doing normal suburbian homes which i enjoyed alot more than these million dollar apartments in which ever city .also every week we are running out of money to do the renos how stupid do they think people are we know this is crap

    1. Hobart would be awesome!
Although I don’t think there is much of a Luxury high end apartment market down here. They’d have to set their sites a little lower to guarantee sales.

      1. “set their sites a little lower” and have a backyard water-feature which includes a waterfall from the River Derwent, lol.

Turn their sights towards Salamanca and make “The Yacht Triple Threat”. A niche market where sinking is always on the cards.
