Director / Producer Joe Murray, best known for his work on ABC comedy productions, has died in hospital.

Murray (pictured third from right) directed on such shows as Countdown, The Big Gig, Live and Sweaty, DAAS Kapital, The Late Show, The Glynn Nicholas Show, In Harmer’s Way, Recovery, Stand Up! plus music show dig tv.

He was also a producer on The Fat and Backberner and previously a vision mixer on Countdown Revolution, The D Generation, The Gillies Report, Australia You’re Standing In It, The Fast Lane and Countdown.

ABC Head of Comedy Rick Kalowski said, “For many of us working at or with ABC TV Comedy, Joe Murray’s shows – from The Late Show to Australia You’re Standing In It – rank high among the reasons we wanted into tv comedy in the first place. Joe’s contribution to our business was great and will endure forever”.

Murray recently came out of retirement to bring his experience to community TV show 31 Questions.

Host and Executive Producer David M. Green said, “Softly-spoken with a gentle soul and fine sense of humour, he was a man who loved the medium as much as he loved his motorbikes. He shared his wealth of knowledge and experience with a new generation of television-makers. It was a rare opportunity and an honour to work with a legend. We will always cherish the brief time we had with Joe, and he will be sorely missed among the cast and crew.”

  1. One of the quietest guys I ever knew, yet underneath it all an outstanding talent. Also made the big switch from “technical” to “production” not that easy to do in the ABC. Very sorry to read this news.
