Why we all owe Cate Blanchett an apology

What hissy fit? Full release of interview shows plenty of banter from Cate Blanchett & Project interview.

Yesterday media (including this site) ran clips of Cate Blanchett apparently incredulous with a question from The Project‘s Jonathan Hyla.

But the full clip, now released, reveals a much different context, where both were joking throughout the interview.

As The Age notes, even TEN promoted the interview on its Twitter account with the hashtag “awkward” (since deleted).

The Project said in a statement it had not played the full interview because, “There was much laughter throughout the interview, and too much content to air in our allowed time – so we will [be] playing the full interview on our website for everyone to enjoy.”

Humbly Cate, we are all eternally sorry…

  1. It was interesting to see the “jump on the bandwagon rants” that went on yesterday when this first come to light; especially on news sites. There is a trend on these new sites to immediately make a situation more than it is. In reality, it was never “news” anyway – an interview on a low rating TV show by someone who most people has never heard of. It was neither funny nor clever. It was, to be honest, quite lazy producing on The Project’s part. It is was a little like the Karl S Indian comments – clearly it was a joke and the people involved were taking it that way but there was people up in arms as he had committed some serious crime. There will be a few people with egg on their face both on TV and on news websites. What does need discussing and many people have raised it is the click-bait approach by Ten and The Project. It doesn’t show a lot of respect for the…

  2. Speak for yourself. Mr Knox. I didn’t bag her at all, thought she was all class. Not a fan of Hyla, but the manipulatively-edited click-bait clip didn’t show him in a good light either.

Here’s a hashtag for ya – #Stoopid Project is Stoopid

  3. I feel really let down by The Project. This sort of promo (the awkward hash tag) is something we got from the more tabloid shows. I thought The Project was better than this. The other thing is why didn’t they show the full interview. In full it was one of the better ones I have seen. I am still a huge fan of The project but hope this is a one off.

    1. The Project has been doing this (re hashtags) for some years now. I’ve not observed for a while but they used to use it to garner some idiosyncratic/unusual quotes/mini stories. I’ve never been a fan of the show because I just saw it as a type of Rove rejigged but my pov may not be commonly shared.

  4. I couldn’t believe there was so much hoo-hah over her interview. Granted it was a strangely edited piece chopping and changing from Cate to others; there was no doubt in my mind it was all play between her and the interviewer. I recall thinking only Cate could get away with such levity; and look at what she was promoting; hardly serious drama.

  5. I thought it was obvious she was just joking around. It does seem though that The Project deliberately tried to mislead people for publicity. Their statement isn’t convincing me to think differently either.
