Media websites yesterday all reported on the exit of a major cast member of Grey’s Anatomy.

Patrick Dempsey told Entertainment Weekly that it was “the right time” to exit the long-running drama.

An original cast member, he departs as Derek Shepherd in the show’s 11th season, despite recently signing a 2 year contract.

“It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good,” he said.

“It was just a natural progression with the way the story was unfolding. It was like, ‘OK!’ This was obviously the right time.”

Dempsey teared up when talking about working with co-star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey.

“It was magic,” he said. “It’s beautiful. We’re like a married couple. It’s ten years, and it was magic from the beginning. Chemistry right away.”

Creator Shonda Rhimes, who penned the episode, acknowledged his part of the Grey’s universe:

“Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example—happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true—of what young women should demand from modern love.

“Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”

In Australia the episode is likely to play in mid May unless Seven doubles up on episodes.

Dempsey said Shepherd was a beloved character who will be much-missed.

“He’s been in their lives for over ten years. But it goes on, and it will evolve.”
