The BBC is recommissioning rebooted period drama Poldark for a second series.

The series, which premieres in Australia this Sunday on ABC, helped BBC1 record its highest ratings share for the first three months of the year in a decade.

The Guardian reports the series starring Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson will return for 8 more episodes covering books three and four of Winston Graham’s novels.

BBC1 controller, Charlotte Moore, said: “It’s been an outstanding start to the year for programme-makers on the channel and their ambition has been in evidence throughout. I want to make sure viewers feel BBC1 is part of their lives and that’s about making sure there is something on BBC1 for everybody.

“We aim to maintain that momentum and continue to move with the times and bring audiences a range of distinctive, high-quality programmes that feel relevant and reflect the diversity of modern Britain.”

Episode 1 screens 8:40pm Sunday night on ABC.

  1. This from the preview piece this week , on ABCTV ,will only be in Low Definition not full HD as shown in the UK . You will miss the impact this show had in the UK . All their BBC/ITV shows are now on HD channels ,by default.BBC has 4 HD channels ! Our ABC has 1 , for news !. It matters as they now do a lot of available light videoing , by candle light in some shots which require the full HDR range in the recording & transmission. On the new TV screens the SD shown by ABCTV looks flat , like Dr Blake .

  2. Great news that it has been such a success.
They were taking a big risk remaking the original – could have gone either way.

Look foward to watching on Sunday.
