New episodes of British mysteries Father Brown and DCI Banks return to ABC next month.

They will air back to back on Saturday nights from May 2nd.

Season 3 of Father Brown aired in the UK in January while Season 3 of DCI Banks first aired in Feburary 2014.

Father Brown: “The Man In The Shadows”

Welcome back to the world of Father Brown. This is England in the 1950s – a countryside dotted with small villages, rural parish churches and large country houses.

Each episode sees Father Brown investigate a crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology. Once again, the enigmatic priest is aided by his no-nonsense parish secretary Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack), glamorous socialite Lady Felicia Montague (Nancy Carroll) and her chauffeur Sid Carter (Alex Price).

In this episode Father Brown finds himself embroiled with MI5, which puts Lady Felicia in a compromising position. To protect secrets in her own past, will she betray her friend?

7:30pm Saturday May 2nd.

DCI Banks

When a man and a woman claiming to be social workers come to Katy Heath’s house and tell her that they need to take away her son Kyle, Katy complies. But when they fail to return her son and are proven to be unknown to social services, DCI Alan Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) quickly instigates a full-scale search for the missing boy.

Why has Kyle been abducted, and what are the chances that he will be found alive?

When a search of Katy’s house reveals a drugs connection, and different witnesses – including Kyle’s father – begin to contradict Katy’s version of events, Banks begins to question the veracity of Katy’s story.

Banks pushes DI Helen Morton (Caroline Catz) to get close to Katy, but in the face of problems with her own son, the proximity to Kyle’s mother only appears to destabilise the detective.

Meanwhile, returning from maternity leave to join the investigation, DS Annie Cabbot (Andrea Lowe) believes she’s found a credible suspect for Kyle’s abduction at his school. Yet to Annie’s frustration, Banks appears to be distancing himself from her.

With the search becoming ever more desperate, Banks must find a way to reconcile his colleagues’ conflicting attitudes to children and parenthood before the hunt for Kyle is in vain.

One Response

  1. S3 of DCI Banks aired on UKTV last year. And S4 has already aired in the UK recently.

S2 of Father Brown was better than S1, but its still rather light daytime TV (the BBC aired all 15 eps in Jan). The previous season didn’t rate well in primetime here. The BBC has announced S4.

Some of the episodes the ABC was running in the afternoon were only scheduled for 45 minutes, so it will create some staggered programming: DCI Banks will start at 8:20 pm on Saturdays. While on Sundays Poldark is starting at 8:43pm, after a News break and running 57-58m for a BBC1 premium drama.
