Sarah Snook will star in her second ABC drama this year, The Beautiful Lie, a contemporary re-telling of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.

It follows her casting in the period miniseries, The Secret River, due in coming months.

Filming on the Endemol drama will commence in Melbourne next week, produced by John Edwards and Imogen Banks.

The series is described as being about ‘love and all that goes with it; family and fidelity, seduction, commitment, jealousy, envy, obligation and mad passion. Love that saves and love that destroys.’

Snook (Sisters of War, Predestination, Spirited) will be joined by Benedict Samuel (The Walking Dead, Underground: The Julian Assange Story, Paper Giants: Magazine Wars) and Rodger Corser (Party Tricks, Puberty Blues, Rush). Also appearing are Celia Pacquola, Daniel Henshall, Sophie Lowe, Alexander England, Catherine McClements, Dan Wyllie and Gina Riley. Directing are Glendyn Ivin and Peter Salmon.

Producers John Edwards and Imogen Banks said, “We’re thrilled to be working with a cast of this calibre on such beautiful, engaging scripts. The Beautiful Lie is a project we are very excited about making.”
The Beautiful Lie is produced by Endemol Australia and written by a fabulous duo of writers Alice Bell (Puberty Blues, The Slap, Rush) and Jonathan Gavin (Party Tricks, Offspring, Mr & Mrs Murder).”

ABC TV Head of Fiction Carole Sklan says, “The producers have assembled a fantastic cast and creative team to realise this resonant story of the complexities of love and passion set in Australia today. Inspired by the great Tolstoy, the writers have taken an incredibly fresh and modern approach. The series promises to be both funny and heartbreakingly sad.”

It will air on ABC later in the year.
