Seven News has been awarded three US-based Edward R. Murrow Awards for its coverage of the 2014 Lindt Café Siege.
Seven News was awarded in the Large Market Television Breaking News, Newscast and Continuing Coverage categories, by The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA).
Network Director of News Rob Raschke said, “It is difficult to accept accolades like this after such tragic circumstances.
“Our rolling coverage of the siege was an incredible Australia-wide team effort, broadcast from a temporary newsroom and studio built in just a couple of hours after our facility was evacuated.”
Seven News US Bureau Chief Mike Amor was also awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award in the Large Market Television Writing category, for a series of reports including his in-depth investigation into armed vigilantes fighting the Mexican drug cartel’s stronghold in Apatzingan.
Regional winners automatically advance to the national Edward R. Murrow Awards, which will be judged in May.

They obviously didn’t see the moment when David Koch went on a rant about refugees and how the siege demonstrated why “we don’t want their type here”.
Is there a category for “TV Station lucky enough to have their studios opposite the action”?
It’s been suggested that the man holding the siege originally wanted to hold Seven hostage, but changed his mind. If true, then it wasn’t a co-incidence.
Did they also win an award for use of annoying watermarks? Hahah
