Seven has signed a deal to broadcast daily coverage of the inaugural European Games in June.

To be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 12 – 28 June, the games will see more than 6,000 athletes compete over 17 days of competition. Twelve of the sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Simon Clegg, Chief Operating Officer of Baku 2015, said: “The Seven Network is an established and
respected Olympic broadcaster and their commitment to the European Games underlines that this is the most important addition to the international sporting calendar for decades.”

Saul Shtein, Seven’s Head of Sport, added: ”As a network we are determined to bring the biggest events in sports to our audiences in Australia. We see the European Games as a natural fit with our long-term commitment to the Olympic Games and our recent agreement to also broadcast the Paralympic Games. We are honoured to be the network of the first European Games. We are proud of our long partnership with the IOC and the Olympic movement, and we look forward to our partnership with Baku 2015.”

With this agreement, Baku 2015 has now announced deals to broadcast the Games in 57 countries.

  1. Seven are really picking up some great sports and at the end of the day its good for us the viewers at home. Its great to see a network utilise their multi-channels well. Really looking forward to what’s coming up in the next couple of years.

  2. Are 7 quietly trying to start up a sports channel? or is just 7mate showing more then ONE used to. seriously they have the rights to The commonwealth games, Olympic games, European games, masters golf, numerous horse racing events, Wimbledon, australian open, nfl, paralympic games, spurs vs sydney fc, stawell gift, vfl, wafl, snafl,

or is it just a sign of the times that Sport and live programming is just essential to compete with the internet and streaming services and that’s why they are purchasing more sport.

    1. Blakeyy – you are probably right that Sport/Live programming is the way to compete with internet and streaming services. There’s no chance of people ‘fast tracking’. Ratings for some of these sport events may not be very high but I think 7 may get some revenue from major sponsors?

  3. 7 has Commonwealth Games, Paralympics, 2016-20 Olympics and now European Games. Really looking forward to the European Games in a couple of months time.

  4. It will probably be screened on 7mate. Whether they do live events or just a one hour daily highlights package remains to be seen. Should be interesting anyways. Broadcast sport overall can pull in viewers other show genres can’t, people don’t download live sport off torrent sites.
