Going once (2.03m), going twice (1.97m), going three times (1.64m)….

The Block‘s auction dominated television last night with its knockout sales and strategic coding that divided the finale into three separate figures. The biggest was 2.03m viewers for the Winner Announced.

While the pricetags went through the roof the ratings did not break records, lower than The Block: Glasshouse -that screened on a Sunday at over 2.7m and was also split into three figures.

Nevertheless everything else took a backseat to the finale with all other entertainment shows under the magic million.

Nine network easily won with a share of 35.1% then Seven 26.8%, ABC and TEN both 16.0% and SBS 6.0%.

Following The Block for Nine were Nine News (1.19m / 1.17m), A Current Affair (1.04m), The Amazing 90s (899,000 in preliminary figures), Hot Seat (646,000) and Forever (347,000).

Seven News (1.01m / 937,000) led for Seven then Home and Away (784,000), My Ireland with Colin (746,000), Mrs. Brown’s Boys (703,000 / 678,000). Million Dollar Minute was 371,000 in 4 cities and Criminal Minds was 361,000.

ABC News (852,000) topped ABC’s evening then 7:30 (688,000), The Weekly (556,000), QI (536,000), Agony (454,000), Antiques Roadshow (377,000) and 8MMM (282,000).

The Project (660,000 / 489) led for TEN. TEN Eyewitness News was 570,000, Wonderland was 405,000, Parky’s Favourite Australians was 389,000 and The Good Wife was 289,000.

Repeats were best on SBS ONE with Sacred Wonders of Britain (252,000), London’s Super Tunnel (250,000) and SBS World News (168,000). The Legacy was 110,000.

GO!’s Big Bang Theory (285,000) was strongest on multichannels.

  1. Is that the 3rd week in a row that Londons Super Tunnel has been on SBS? I know it was on two weeks in a row but surely it wasn’t the same one last night…?

  2. The ads on The block did indeed seem to go much longer than usual – they were definitely pushing the boundaries of how many ads they could show. And yes – to those of us (at least 1.6 million!) who watched the whole show, the ad repetition for Love Child and Reno Rumble is enough to turn you off.

I thought the actual winner announced on the show was something like a minute, then it ended? Thankfully though, unlike some seasons, it was all over by 9pm. Pretty sure one of them dragged out until 9.50 or so once.

    1. Compared to other finales they did get to the auctions a lot quicker. I suspect in response to frustration over those early weeks and extended eps. It was bizarre Tracy Grimshaw was doing a live cross to Scott Cam at about 7:32 to tell us what was coming up in The Block. If ACA had skipped that, the show could have started at 7:30!

      1. The EPG originally had 8.45 as the finish time and start for The Nineties. As I obviously did not trust that time, I put in just about the whole night of Nine to record to ensure I could see The Nineties at some stage. Thankfully they updated to 9.00pm which was close to what happened.

  3. I guess I was the only one who forgot the block final was on last night. If one episode of a show can be coded into three parts then I don’t believe the ratings anymore.

  4. well I actually enjoyed Colin’s tour of Ireland. It made me want to jump on a plane and visit there. Lovely scenery.

I enjoyed Wonderland and I loved last nights ep of the good wife but sad to see Kalinda go.

  5. Loved Mrs’ Brown back on last night with new eps, considering the strong competition with the Block it did quite well. I watched the Block and Pvr’d Mrs. Brown and watch it straight after The Block finished.

One thing about nine with the Block, their ad breaks were quite long. They had 3 mins of ads and then 3 mins of cross promotion with Reno Rumble and Love child, I got annoyed with these shows already

  6. I’m surprised they had the finale on a Wednesday. Is it because ch9 figured Sunday would attract decent numbers usually anyway while mid week is fairly soft normally ?

  7. SBS’s cupboard is looking quite bare. London’s Super Tunnel was shown over Summer and Sacred Wonders of Britain was shown twice last year. ABC’s Antique’s Roadshow was a repeat from couple of months ago, having run through this block of episodes.

Seven and Nine have avoided putting contest shows up against each others finals. On Tuesday night round 2 starts.
