Next month the BIO channel airs When the Queen Came to Town, a premiere doco that takes us back to a young Queen Elizabeth in her maiden visit to Australia.
The Queen’s maiden visit to Australia in 1954 marked the end of one era and the dawn of another. It was post- depression, post WWII, and pre-TV, and Australians came in their millions to bask in the presence of a monarch. These memories and the footage captured are still vivid to this day. Drawing on the 35mm Technicolor cinemascope film footage and home movies shot by those who witnessed the pageantry and ceremony, we recreate that time and reflect on how it touched the lives and fabric of Australian society.
Monday June 8 at 7.30pm on BIO.

The same doco about the Queen’s 1954 visit the ABC showed on Australia Day 1990 and which has been on YouTube for more than ten years? No wonder pay TV is struggling.
With hundreds of channels on offer subscribers understand they are getting a mix of exclusive and non-exclusive content. Same model as FTA and Streaming.
I’d say that it’s more likely to be the documentary that was released last year by Umbrella Entertainment, directed by Maurice Murphy and narrated by Bert Newton.
