Foxtel and SBS have joined a list of corporate businesses in a full page ad in The Australian calling for Marriage Equality.

The list includes major banks ANZ, Commonwealth, WestPac, NAB, St.George, Bank of Melbourne plus such brands as Qantas, Telstra, Google, Optus, iiNet, David Jones, ING, P&O Cruises, Seek, H&M, Lush, KPMG, PWC, Marie Claire, Football Federation Australia and Virgin.

It follows the recent referendum in Ireland which voted overwhelmingly for same-sex marriage, and recent polls which indicate 72% of Australians support marriage equality.

This week PM Tony Abbott indicated there should be bi-partisan support for the issue and Cabinet would decide if there would be a free vote on the question of gay marriage.

Last night his sister Christine Forster told ABC’s Lateline, she expects gay marriage will be legal in Australia by the end of the year.

“To think that this reform comes under the prime ministership of Tony Abbott … I think it’s entirely appropriate that it would come under the prime ministership of Tony Abbott,” she said.

“At the end of the day I’m sure he will understand that this is good and fair for everybody and it will be great for Australia.”

Rodney Croome, national convener of Australian Marriage Equality, said in a statement: “I applaud Australia’s business community for its leadership on marriage equality, and for the powerful message it is sending to our federal representatives about moving forward quickly on the reform.

“The business community’s support for marriage equality reflects the importance it places on treating all staff and customers with equal respect, and of maintaining Australia’s positive reputation overseas.

“The 72 per cent of Australians who support marriage equality will look with pride on those businesses who are reflecting their values, and expect parliament to do the same.”

17:55: SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid talks about corporates losing staff because they want to live somewhere where their partner is recognised.

  1. I’m not sure why this topic is even here – what the hell has it got to do with TV?
Why would Foxtel and SBS even have an opinion on this issue?
    (The ABC I do understand.)
Now I must be honest and upfront – I am a married person with no kids.
I’m campaigning for legal threesomes, or even moresomes. Why discriminate?
    Equality for all, I say!

    1. Over the years the site has posted a number of articles on networks supporting various causes whether social, environmental etc. so two broadcasters making public endorsement is entirely newsworthy. But the post also has Lateline references and a managing director talking about his early career, again an easy fit. Readers choose which posts are of interest to them.

  2. Ok just to remember this is my opinion and I have no problem with people being female but I don’t think they should be able to vote, for me voting is between a man and the ballot box and should always be that way, I think females should make there own like voting thing that gives the same rights as voting but isn’t called voting, I’m sorry if this offended anyone this is just my view. 🙂

  3. Also where on earth did they get 72 per cent want this? Did they just ask one college? Or inner city people? Cause I’m telling u its not that high all of australia wide, most small country towns would be the other way, last figure I heard was 54 per cent wants this, btw in Mexico this vote happened and 60 per cent said no but judge overturned it and said yes, so it doesn’t matter what we say

    1. “…most small country towns would be the other way…”

And just where did you get that from? Did you just ask one small country town? Or remote community people?

Seriously, what business is it of yours or anyone else’s how two strangers wish to express their commitment to each other? You do know that it’s not going to be compulsory?

  4. Ok just to remember this is my opinion and I have no problem with people being gay but I don’t think they should be able to get married, for me marriage is between a man and a woman and should always be that way, I think gays should make there own like marriage thing that gives the same rights as marriage but isn’t called marriage, I’m sorry if this offended anyone this is just my view. 🙂

      1. Huh? Im not a bigot, just because I think marriage should stay between a man and a woman doesn’t mean I’m hating on gays or anything, this is just my view and many like me, we just to scared to make a stand cause we get bashed like this, geez please learn people have different views, peace

  5. When a gay man or woman, currently aged over 40 (to age of death) feels comfortable telling there family and friends, they are attracted to the same sex as themselves. That’s the day we will see true acceptance of the gay community.

  6. Strange how Foxtel – half owned by News Corp – is there but News itself isn’t. Perhaps only the Telstra part of Foxtel supports equality.

    1. focus on the positives, the ones that are there, not the absentees…jeez… The law is likely to change next week which will ensure that a small but significant proportion of the population will be able to live their life like the rest of us and the country will be a better place for it. Is now really the time to whinge about a couple of companies that are not in an ad?

    1. Not really; ‘Virgin’ is not much more than a brand-for-hire with Richard Branson as its face.

They’re 3 totally different companies in Australia – Virgin Money is 100% owned by Bank of Qld, Virgin Mobile is 100% owned by Optus, while Virgin Airlines is 90% owned by Air NZ / Singapore Air / Ethiad with only 10% owned by Virgin Group (the Richard Branson bit).

  7. Equal marriage rights for sexual minorities have progressed around the world under centre or centre right govts. NZ,UK and some of the states of the US are prime examples. The left just spout on about stuff but do Nothing. However I still have one big issue with the Australian Marriage Equality org…when are you going to fight for the rights of us poor blokes in an opposite sex marriage who find themselves way down the pecking order..1st My wife, Joint 2nd my 2 daughters, 4th the cat (f),5th the bunny (m), joint 6th me and the fish…can this be your next campaign…yeah?
