HBO is shifting to online links for media previews following the leak of 4 episode of Game of Thrones.

The episodes were reported to have come via a watermarked DVD screener to media ahead of the Season 5 premiere, but the identifying watermark with a recipient number had been blurred.

Now HBO will offer international press access to preview HBO programs via an online media site.

In recent years most networks and distributors have migrated from DVD screeners to online links for journalists, a move which is faster, cheaper and with added security.

HBO premiered its hit series in more than 170 countries simultaneously, in order to combat piracy.

“Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them,” it said at the time.

Thankfully the show is still drawing big crowds for Foxtel, yesterday averaging 201,000 and 156,000 across two broadcasts.

  1. It’s particularily sad that someone within the entertainment media is leaking GOT. You’d think they would know more about how damaging it is to the industry better than most.

Hopefully by using online viewing for media, they can track individual views using hidden codes or something that can better track than watermarks who is doing it.
