Netflix outperforms rivals, but govt acts on level-playing field.

Media articles talk up the early numbers for Netflix, just as the govt readies to hit digital downloads.

Several media articles this week suggest Netflix is leading the race in streaming subscriptions.

Pocketbook Australia reports Netflix is the most popular subscription service in Australia for non-businesses, while the Netflix launch was three times more successful than the Stan launch.

According to its research Netflix now has a 1% advantage over Foxtel for the month of April, with Foxtel at 38% and Netflix at 39%. Stan today has around 7% of the total market, a significant achievement from a zero start a few months ago. The most popular Netflix package is the second-tier $11.99 per month package.

Meanwhile global research company Experian Hitwise reports Netflix has more than doubled the daily site visits of ABC’s iview.

But it’s not all good news with the government set to introduce a GST to digital downloads for companies including Netflix, Google and Microsoft in today’s budget.

Free to Air networks and Foxtel have been pushing for a “level-playing field” against multinationals based overseas.

  1. “…for the month of April…”
Given that the free trial period ran into April, plus what Johnjet has said below, I’d say that these stats are about as useless as most stats quoted in the media. For a clearer picture, let’s see what the state of play is at the end of June.

  2. Given that Netflix, has charged me another months subscription, after I cancelled before my free trial ended and has done so for quite a few people, no wonder they are winning in terms of subscribers. They won’t let you go.
