Long-running US procedural Bones has been renewed for an 11th season.

Ahead of the renewal there were some concerns that David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel might not renew their contracts.

However showrunner Stephen Nathan, who has been with the series since the very first episode, is stepping down to work on other projects at FOX.

Executive producer Jonathan Collier and co-executive producer Michael Peterson will lead the show, while Nathan hopes to re-join the series later in the season.

The current series has averaged 7.7 million US viewers including timeshifting, but EW notes it is a series that can deliver consistently in a tough time slot.

Bones airs in Australia on Seven, albeit not always in the same slot.

  1. Bones ratings haven’t been great since moved to Fridays and cut the production budget, even one it got a slightly better slot on Thursdays. So while Fox wanted to renew it (given the current ratings woes) they weren’t going to be signing blank checks to keep the leads.

Boreanaz seemed keen. He did post a congratulation to every for ten years tweet when production wrapped, which was taken as a sign by the tea leaf readers that Fox wasn’t going to renew it. Deschanel sounded less keen, not wanting to be the one who said no but qualifying her support with “under certain circumstances, I would definitely consider”. How much that was a desire to spend time off after her second child and how much a negotiating position we will never know.

Fox also quietly announced before the upfronts that the syndication gods hadn’t saved The Mindy Project. So it becomes the second show to be…
