Nine / Fairfax streaming service Stan has announced its first local commission, a comedy from Jungleboys, No Activity.
It marks the first local commission amongst the new streaming services in Australia.
No Activity is described as ‘an improvised comedy that follows two detectives on a stakeout, waiting for the action to unfold – a look at what happens when nothing is happening. The narrative juxtaposes a snail’s-paced crime story with the rapidly expanding personal stories of the two detectives as they riff on the oddities of life, work, love, family, hopes, regrets and everything in between.’
“We’re hugely excited to be working with the team at Jungleboys to bring the first Stan original comedy series to life. Stan’s ambition has always been to work with Australian producers to create and distribute world-class shows. We look forward to No Activity joining our stellar lineup of critically acclaimed US and UK programming,” Nick Forward, Stan’s Director of Product and Content, said.
The cast includes Patrick Brammall (The Moodys, Ruben Guthrie), Darren Gilshenan (The Moodys, Maximum Choppage), Dan Wyllie (Love My Way, Puberty Blues), Harriet Dyer (Love Child, Ruben Guthrie), Genevieve Morris (Comedy Inc, City Homicide), David Field (A Moody Christmas, The Rover), Damon Herriman (Justified, INXS: Never Tear us Apart) and Sam Simmons (Problems, It’s a Date).
High-profile guest stars will also make appearances.
“No Activity is a show we’ve been thinking about for a while. With Stan we’ve found a partner who shares our vision and has given us the freedom to make something we are passionate about. It’s exciting to be making a series outside the constraints of scheduled TV, allowing us to push the boundaries,” Jason Burrows, Managing Director of Jungleboys, said.
Trent O’Donnell (A Moody Christmas, Review with Myles Barlow, The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting New Girl) is writer and director and was developed together with Patrick Brammall, Darren Gilshenan and David Field. Jason Burrows is Executive producer and Chloe Rickard is Producer.
No Activity is a Jungleboys production for Stan. International distribution will be shared between Stan and Jungleboys. The series films in Sydney and Los Angeles and will premiere on Stan in late 2015.
Stan also is developing two other local projects, Wolf Creek and Enemies of the State, but is yet to confirm commissions.

I’d be interested in being a Stan subscriber provided they have more Aussie content, or as much as they can get, and commission Australian shows. This is a very good start. Short and sweet, and entertaining. Locally produced shows is where guys like Stan can differentiate themselves because they won’t be able to beat the likes of Netflix – I don’t think anyway.
This is great news. Stan’s strength is local content, Netxflix Aus is appalling. In fact it’s appalling for everything. Stan is far superior. Hopefully more people sign up to Stan so they can justify more local commissions.
Good on them. This is clearly a relatively inexpensive investment intended to test the waters of commissioning something for an Aus streaming service. Am interested to see who they manage to get as guest stars.
