The success of the recent Smash concert on Broadway has led to more good news.

Universal Stage Productions has confirmed it is now developing “Bombshell” into a full-blown show.

“No matter what you say about Marilyn Monroe, she is one of the most potent figures of our time, and there’s no diminishing of it,” said Robert Greenblatt, the chairman of NBC Entertainment, which broadcast Smash. It just is an endlessly fascinating life and story, and we think there’s something to harness there.”

The project has Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, producers from the Oscar winning film adaptation of Chicago, songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman who collaborated on Hairspray, and Joshua Bergasse, the choreographer from On the Town. Steven Spielberg will also take an unspecified role.

But Universal has not announced a book writer or committed to an actual production.

  1. The Bombshell numbers were the best part of Smash by far. Much better than the silly soap surrounding them in S1 and the failed conversion of the show to a musical soap in S2 with actors bursting into song while walking down the street, before they got run over by random cars.

  2. Such a great idea. I love the soundtrack from Smash and always hoped a stage production would come of it one day. Hope it comes to Australia down the track.
