Degrassi: Next Class to open on Netflix

Netflix has thrown recently axed series Degrassi a lifeline, with an order for 20 episodes for Degrassi: Next Class, just days after it was axed.

“Degrassi graduates to Netflix. Meet the Next Class, coming in 2016,” Netflix said on its Twitter account.

Stephen Stohn,co-executive producer, tweeted: “And now the rest of the story… Degrassi signs to Family Channel in Canada and worldwide on Netflix, Degrassi: Next Class debuts early 2016.”

The latest incarnation will tell the stories of Generation Z, the producers said, as the young characters start their journey into adulthood, tackling homophobia, racism, substance abuse, body issues and heartbreak. The new series will continue to be shot in Toronto.

However a date for Australia and France will be later than 2016.
