Matt Smith and John Lithgow have been cast in upcoming Netflix drama The Crown.

The drama will explore the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the events that shaped the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the prime ministers of Britain’s post-war destiny. It is based on Peter Morgan’s play The Audience, which recently netted Helen Mirren a Tony Award.

Wolf Hall‘s Claire Foy will feature as Queen Elizabeth II, Matt Smith as Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, and John Lithgow as Sir Winston Churchill.

Hollywood Reporter notes each season will focus on the delicate balance between the Queen’s private world and public life. Season one begins with a 25-year-old princess faced with the daunting prospect of leading the most famous monarchy in the world while forging a relationship with the domineering, war-hardened prime minister, Churchill.

The drama sees Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) reunite with director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and producer Andy Harries (The Queen). Stephen Daldry, Philip Martin and Julian Jarrold will direct.

It will screen in 2016.
