Sarah Snook in demand

At only 27 years of age Sarah Snook is fast developing a formidable body of work, now with calls for work from Australia, the US and the UK.

Having won rave reviews for Predestination she is currently appearing in Kate Grenville’s The Secret River as Sal Thornhill, colonial wife of William Thornhill (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), a story steep in Indigenous themes and dispossession.

“It felt like we had to earn the right to tell the story in the right way. Hopefully we did the right thing,” she says.

“I feel like Part One is introducing families, both white and black and then Part Two is the consequences both of them have on each other. But one is so much worse than the other.

“I really love history because the people in moments of history never knew what was coming. We can’t (predict) the future. But looking back you think ‘How did they not know that was going to be an amazing moment? How did they not know they were going to lose that battle?’

“When you’re in that situation you always just want to know what’s coming next.”

The NIDA graduate’s resume already includes Redfern Now, Spirited, The Moodys, and My Place while Holding the Man has just screened in the Sydney Film Festival.  Set to open in coming months are Oddball with Shane Jacobson and Deborah Mailman plus The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet, Liam Hemsworth, Judy Davis and Hugo Weaving.

Snook is currently filming The Beautiful Lie, coming to ABC later this year.

“I’m in my 20s without the responsibility of family, mortgage, I’m trying to choose the things that I want to be proud to look back on,” she explains.

The Secret River concludes 8:30pm Sunday on ABC.
