2015 Emmy nods: so who missed out?

Empire, The Missing, The Good Wife, The Americans, The Affair, Big Bang Theory -it's a high profile list of snubs this year.

Now we have digested the lengthy Emmy nominations list, it’s time for the annual snub list.

There are always big names that miss out, even when the Academy manages to boost categories such as Drama and Comedy.

Ben Mendelsohn is the highest profile Aussie to land a nod, for Bloodline.

“As an actor who has spent twenty years trying to crack America, the day I reached the Bloodline set and found my name on a chair next to Sissy Spacek’s was the happiest of my working life. This has just matched it. Thank you, Daniel Zelman, Glenn and Todd Kessler, for creating, in Danny Rayburn, this absolute gift of a role and to Netflix for allowing me to bring him to life (and death). I am grateful beyond measure,” he said.

But other Aussies such asNicole Kidman in Grace of Monaco (a telemovie in the US) and Frances O’Connor in The Missing both dipped out (where is James Nesbitt for The Missing please?), along with numerous other US-based jobbing actors. There are probably some others nominated in the Creative Arts Emmys, given it covers everything from hairdressing to FX.

Amongst those that didn’t fare too well: Empire, The Good Wife, The Big Bang Theory, The Missing, Penny Dreadful, The Americans, The Walking Dead, Jane the Virgin, Ray Donovan, The Affair, Masters of Sex, The Leftovers, Marvel’s Daredevil, Outlander -yes, apparently Downton Abbey is still better than them all.

Lily Tomlin gets a nod for Grace & Frankie but not Jane Fonda. Cue the on-set rivalry?

Please Like Me was always going to be a no-show. I understand it opted not to submit itself due to Josh Thomas being in Australia filming when he would have needed to be on the ground in the US to campaign. Expect that to change next year.

But it was great to see Tatiana Maslany finally recognised for Orphan Black.

Who else do you reckon was snubbed?

  1. I think the Jane Fonda non recognition may have more to do with the the long held animosity a lot of Americans feel for her….going back many years to the Vietnam thing….
I chat with many in the US daily…and the depths of their dislike for her …I still find incredible …even after all these years have passed….Just my observation…

    1. That’s just silly. Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes, BAFTAs – she’s won just about every award under the sun since then. She was nominated here last year! The film and TV industry doesn’t give two hoots about something 40 years ago.

    1. Yep pretty sure I saw a tweet from Dax Shepherd (Crosby) about the complete lack of nominations for the show over its run. Pretty sure the only ever nomination was for Monica Potter when her character had the cancer

    1. Not true; the show has been nominated for Most Outstanding Comedy Series for I think the past four years in a row, and Jim Parsons won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series the past four years. I know the show has been nominated for half a dozen categories this year, but snubbing those two biggies with that history is pretty big. Again, not that I’m complaining 😉

  2. Masters of Sex was my favorite drama of the past year, but I’m not surprised it got snubbed as it aired a year ago and wouldn’t be fresh in the mind of voters. Surprised about TBBT being snubbed based on previous performance but happy it was. Wish Ellen Pompeo got a nod for her work after Derek’s death but knew it was never gonna happen.

Honestly I’m just so thrilled about Tatiana Maslany that even when thinking about snubs this year, I can’t wipe the smile off my face!

  3. Constance Wu was expected to get a nod for ‘Fresh off the boat’. What does Simon Helberg have to do to get a nod for Big Bang Theory. I think he is a George Constanza of this generation of sitcom characters.

  4. Mandy Patinkin not being nominated for the most recent Homeland season is one of the bigger snubs I can think of this year. Why do they love Jim Carter so much?

  5. Absolutely agree with Orphan Black (Tatiana) being nominated and hopefully the winner this year.
But what about ‘Rectify’? and Aden Young? Can not remember if the show or the actor where nominated last year, but the series is still running no?

  6. The most shocking Emmy oversight over the past few years has been Justified. It’s at least as good as the best two or three shows of the last few years – Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Mad Men. The writing is excellent. The lead performances are great. And if Timothy Olyphant isn’t the most charismatic man on television, then who is?!

It’s nice to see Emmy has finally caught up with Tatiana Maslany, but it’s taken two years. And instead they’ve been repeatedly nominating several rather undeserving actors from Downton Abbey – the recipient of more undeserved nominations than any show in Emmy history.

  7. It does defy belief that Downton is still there, it’s been past its best for a few years now.
The most recent season of the good wife was a big letdown after the fantastic season 5.
Empire once again proves that popularity does not equal awards (well, maybe, except peoples choice awards)

  8. I was shocked Empire was largely overlooked, considering how massive it was in the States. (side note: Empire begins on FOX8 on August 31 according to their Twitter. Hopefully they have better luck with it then Ten!)

    1. I enjoyed Enpire, but think of it as a nighttime soap rather than a full-fledged “drama”. But too flashy and melodramatic which is enjoyable, but is why I wouldn’t have voted for it and perhaps why voters didn’t either.

  9. About time Tatiana was recognised.
She is brilliant in Orphan Black – my favourite character of hers is the inimitable Helena.
Yes, James was a glaring omission.
