G00d to hear ABC will be screening The Honourable Woman next month.

This is heavy duty and introspective, but with a knockout performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The cast also includes Aussie Genevieve O’Reilly, currently seen in Glitch.

As a young girl, Anglo-Israeli Nessa Stein (Maggie Gyllenhaal) witnessed the assassination of her father by the armed wing of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation.

Now in her late thirties, Nessa is at the forefront of the Middle East peace process. An independent entrepreneur, equal parts idealist and pragmatist, she has worked tirelessly to help cultivate an atmosphere of reconciliation between the Israelis and Palestinians. Ennobled for her campaigning work, the newly made Baroness must fight forces that are conspiring against her as she awards a highly lucrative contract to a Palestinian businessman.

When he is subsequently killed, Nessa and her brother Ephra (Andrew Buchan) come under the renewed close scrutiny of Whitehall and the Secret Intelligence Service.

Set against the gripping backdrop of government paranoia and espionage, The Honourable Woman tells the story of one woman’s personal journey to right the wrongs conducted in a past life.

From the corridors of governmental power to the sibling dynamic that bonds the Stein family’s private purpose, Whitehall and MI6, Washington and the CIA, The Palestinian Authority and a Gaza safe-house – the visual backdrop of Hugo Blick’s compelling drama is as stunning and refined as the story that drives it.

Thursday August 20 8:30pm ABC.

  1. This is a must-watch mini-series. Gyllenhaal is fantastic (isn’t she always?). However, Buchan is miscast and gives his usual insipid performance.

Great to see that ABC is putting something this strong on a Thursday when the commercial networks aren’t even trying.

  2. ABC now gets to screen some BBC dramas that were previously in the BBC First 12 month exclusivity deal on Foxtel which expires in August. I must say I’m very disappointed with BBC First. They have locked out the ABC but only shown half a dozen series themselves

    1. BBC First has had shown first runs of nearly everything they own that isn’t covered by existing distribution deals without ads: An Honourable Woman, Call The Midwife, The Politician’s Husband, The Missing, The Fall, WPC 56, Hinterland, Shetland, The Musketeers, The Village, Peaky Blinders, Our Zoo, Casualty, Death in Paradise, Ice Cream Girls, Fresh Meat, Episodes, Indian Summers, Rev, The Drive, The Game, The Interceptor, The Passing Bells, Truckers, Critical, Breathless, Wolf Hall, Banished, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

Exceptions are Poldark which they sold it to the ABC and the latest series of. DCI Banks on UK TV with ads.
