ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards 2015: winners

Pay TV industry recognises its best in marketing, promotion and more, last night in Sydney.

The 2015 ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards were held in Sydney last night.

Now in their 9th year the awards recognise achievement in marketing, public relations, advertising, social media and promotion in subscription television.

The event was hosted by MTV Australia’s Kate Peck with award presenters including Steve Liebmann from The History Channel and SKY News, FOX Sports’ Matt Shirvington, actors Craig Hall and Sara Wiseman from SoHo’s A Place to Call Home and Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein.

Ten awards, including three new categories for individual achievement were given out:
● ASTRA Creative Professional of the Year: Dan Aldridge ​(BBC)
● ASTRA Rising Star: Abdel Moorhouse ​(Foxtel Arts)
● ASTRA Television Professional of the Year: Geoff Crane​ (SKY NEWS Australia)

Programs on The LifeStyle Channel won three awards:
● Most Outstanding Campaign Under $50,000: ​Gogglebox Australia – ‘Gogglebox Yourself’
● Most Outstanding Use of Innovation: ​Selling Houses Australia – ‘Social Editions’
● Most Outstanding Social Media Campaign: ​Selling Houses Australia – ‘Social Editions’

The other award winners are:
● Most Outstanding Off­Air Promotion (also a new category): ‘Game of Thrones Season 5’ (showcase)
● Most Outstanding On­Air Promotion: ‘Fox Footy – 2015 Season Launch’ ​(FOX FOOTY)
● Most Outstanding Public Relations Campaign: ‘SLIMEFEST 2014’​(Nickelodeon)
● Most Outstanding Advertising Campaign: ‘Defence Force Recruiting’​for The Recruit Season 1 (FOX8)

“There can be little doubt that subscription television sits apart from its competitors in terms of quality. It gives creative people the freedom to execute campaigns that are diverse, highly creative and sometimes even daring.

“We regard them as our industry’s unsung heroes, professionals whose work behind the scenes deserves formal recognition, like the stars themselves.”

The ASTRA Industry Excellence Awards, now in its ninth year, are judged by leaders in subscription television and other creative industries, who assess each nomination on its objective, creativity, implementation and success.”

ASTRA Television Professional of the Year
Winner: Geoff Crane, Camera & Operations Director, SKY NEWS
Awarded to the subscription television industry’s most outstanding individual working in a role other than creative, marketing or communications. Geoff is a SKY NEWS original starting his career with the network in 1996. Leading by example he travels on assignment to virtually every continent as he directs SKY NEWS’ political coverage and correspondents. A career spanning decades, Geoff has never been formally recognised, until now, for his great achievements.

ASTRA Rising Star
Winner: Abdel Moorhouse, Programming Assistant, Foxtel Arts
This category is to award the subscription television industry’s most outstanding individual under 30 years of age.
Abdel’s background at Foxtel has seen him rapidly progress from Presentation Coordinator to Programming Assistant at Foxtel Arts. He is a highly proactive member of the team who tackles any new work flow, system or piece of technology fearlessly and with enthusiasm.
Finalists: Nancy­Maree Ryan (BBC); Abdel Moorhouse (Foxtel Arts); Zakary Chenoweth (Foxtel Music Channels); and Topher Willis (NBC Universal)

ASTRA Creative Professional of the Year
Winner: Dan Aldridge, Head of Creative, BBC
Highly Commended: Carly Heaton, H​ead of Brand Strategy and Creative, ​A&E, History, Bio and crime + investigation
This award is to recognise the subscription television industry’s most outstanding individual working in a
creative, marketing or communications function. Dan Aldridge possesses creativity and dedication to excellence that has driven the perception of BBC’s quality in Australia and New Zealand. The BBC First campaign he designed has been adopted by the BBC global team for the roll out of BBC First around the world and now represents the benchmark of excellence. Dan simultaneously launched a full service internal department, taking design and audio in­house, building and training the team just months before launch.
