Grant Denyer told to delete “swearing” tweet

Remember, if you're hosting a family show, you'd better be careful what you say (even if you're right).

I agreed with Grant Denyer’s sentiment in his outraged tweet yesterday but was a bit concerned about the choice of words he used.

Yesterday he tweeted his despair at the morning’s news:

“Am I asleep? Did marriage equality just get blocked AND cat videos nearly got 1 million viewers last night? F*** it I give up!”

His outrage got retweeted far and wide for managing to encapsulate all that was wrong with the nation yesterday.

But when you’re hosting a show with kids, someone is likely to remind you to mind your language.

  1. That word is so much a part of the vernacular of many Australians these days…and possibly the past 20+ years…that I am surprised it even has shock value anymore….

    1. Well this “moron” uses this time to get the family off the devices, sit around and enjoy a game show that a family can partake in and actually interact together. And the below comment regarding “…hosts a show that features children spelling words”, why can’t there be shows for kids? You know, one where we get them learning and excited about it too. FFS comments are just ridiculous when we talk about different programming that you don’t enjoy!

      1. I have a theory about why people dont like and then insult the Spelling Bee show – because it highlights children who are smarter than them

The last thing most people want to be reminded when they watch TV is that they are dumb and there are a group of children infinitely smarter than them. So in the end, they watch cat videos.

      2. If people enjoy the spelling and the cats, good on them, but both shows are scraping the bottom of the barrel. The cat show getting close to a million viewers is no worse than a spelling bee getting a similar figure.

    2. I love FF and I don’t consider myself a moron at all thanks very much! Most of the stuff I watch is pretty complex and emotive so I like having something fun and easy to watch to decompress after work. I find it very strange when people are labelled because of what entertainment they like – now that’s moronic.

  2. Nothing wrong with the nation yesterday, it was a great day especially with the hilarious news about the kitty show rating so high. Grant’s a naughty boy for swearing. As regards the faux outrage with regard to same sex marriage, it was blocked for 6 years under the ALP RuddGillardRudd regime. Best bet for that issue would be an Irish style vote….but not a referendum with the complexties and hurdles, just a simple plebiscite with a simple question and a simple result. Job done and everyone shuts up afterwards

    1. Jezza… this is a TV website so we shouldn’t really fight politics. However.. the rights of a minority should never be put to a referendum or a simple plebiscite…
Imagine if they put a referendum to the people about some of the indigenous rights on the political agenda. Us common folk are inherently self righteous and some things need to be decided by Parliaments (and in some countries the courts) so that they are fair and just with personal/religious beliefs removed from the equation.
You might think that you and your friends will vote yes, but selfishly and quite rightly so, I don’t want this decision being placed in the hands of the less socially progressive parts of the country – just so the ‘job is done and everyone shuts up’

      1. Yes it is a tv website but there is a reference to marriage etc….. so its worth commenting on. I just think that Ireland has led the way on this subject and that country having debated same sex marriage, then voted on it are now united behind the result, even some of the folk who ardently campaigned against it. That is surely a better outcome for everyone concerned. For the record there is no such thing as marriage equality, having been married for a couple of decades, I rank about 5th or 6th within the household, so there may be a few same sex couples on a steep learning curve on that front if/when it becomes law

  3. No Denyer is just out of touch with reality.

Gay Marriage did not get blocked, the Coalition voted to maintain the position against it that it took to the Australian people at the last election. But has agreed to a plebiscite or referendum (we’ll believe that when we see it).

    Cats are cute
