Larry Emdur’s dream of a late-night variety show is closer to becoming a reality, according to reports today.
The very-versatile Emdur reportedly bankrolled his own pilot for Larry On Late, two years ago.
News Corp hears whispers Seven is considering the show for 2016, with With Seven boss Tim Worner said to be a fan of the format.
Networks are understood to be looking at more Live content for 2016, as audiences continue to fragment.
Nine is filming a Q & A-style pilot with Karl Stefanovic in Sydney on September 9th.

A lot of people seem to be referring to former “stripped” late night chat shows. Given the current climate, I would expect these to be weekly not nightly shows.
My first thought when I read this was if the networks are now interested in airing late night talk shows then where are they going to put the overseas dramas which are already pushed back to late night timeslots?
Larry is ok on The Morning Show but 7 should be a bit more daring and edgy for a late night show. I also think 9 are playing a bit too safe with Karl. I wish TEN would do a late night show as they are the only ones that would look for someone a bit edgier. About time we had a female host a tonight show. That other Natasha (not Belling) on Wake-Up was good. What’s happened to her.
I hope 7 go through with it. Larry is charming and respectful. Have a 9.30 start no later. I used to like Don Lane at 9.30, 10pm is too late.
I used to enjoy Steve Vizard’s show and think Larry would make a nice change to this type of show, It appears that he wanted to do a show like this a couple of years ago which never got off the ground, would like to bet that channel 9 now say that 7 have copied them in doing a show like this against Karl, just watch this space to see if I am right.
That should have read introduced!
Larry is fantastic, I know its a while ago, but I was headwriter on Tonight Live in 1993 when Larry hosted a week of shows with Peter Rowsthorn. He was a charming host and drew the best from his guests, including Liv Ulman, who Larry mistakenly intrigued as ‘Liz’
I’d watch this over kjarldrunkonairafterlogiesbutstillwinsgoldstefanovic. larry would be great at this.
We need new blood in television.
That will never happen. The industry is run by connections that don’t let anyone in cause its clique of the same people who have jobs in all fields, TV, radio and print. 3 jobs that pay extremely well, one of those jobs would do a normal person.
I too miss Ten’s late news (with Sandra Sully). Even with all the ways we can access news these days there is always something about having a show that caps off the night. Lateline did fill this void until they decided with a format change this year.
With Ray Martin popping up on Ten lately, it made me think that he would be great to sign on to a late night show. He has a proven record over so many formats. Pair him up with Natarsha Belling for the news headlines, he would be great for an in depth piece, serious pollie or fluffy celebrity interview, whole show focusing on the story of the day… Lateline meets Coast to Coast meets The Project meets Letterman… the potential is there.
Larry is great talent. Give it a go ch7 in the summer hiatus, he might just be what you need to shake up a dull program schedule.
Free to air TV is desperately in need of something in the late night timeslot. Since the demise of late news bulletins there’s nothing to keep audiences around. I for one always stayed up to watch Ten Late News back in the Sandra Sully days and was an avid viewer of the Steve Vizard show back in the day. Karl vs Larry could be interesting.
Larry used to fill in a bit for Steve Vizard back in the day .. Maybe even every Friday night. Another guest host who was also on The Morning Show this week was Agro
As long as it’s not filled with Seven celebrities/non-celebrities as guests.
Like any other variety show in this country, no doubt it will be a mix of seven’s personalities and whoever is touring.
I probably would not have thought of Larry Emdur as a likely candidate for a late night show nor would I expect 7 to experiment with a late show format but good luck for them.
Too young to remember when they experimented with “the night cap” ?
Never heard of it, so yes.
