Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is now developing a new drama which centres around three young nuns for the US ABC network.

The project from writer and executive producer Alison Schapker will tell the story of a group of nuns fighting the closure of their Bronx convent, while also dealing with three young novices whose arrival brings up old secrets. The show promises to “throw into question everything you think you know about the ‘brides of Christ.’”

But while it remains untitled, the drama is not an adaptation of Australia’s acclaimed Brides of Christ for our ABC.

The 1991 series, which starred Naomi Watts, Brenda Fricker, Rebecca Gibney, Lisa Hensley and Sandy Gore was written by Sue Smith & John Alsop and produced by Sue Masters with Penny Chapman & Liam Miller as executive producers.

The award-winning drama was set in 1963 at the time of Vatican II.

Rhimes is also behind How to Get Away with Murder, Private Practice and Scandal.

  1. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Shonda Rhimes adapts her standard formula – gratuitous sex, duplicity, backstabbing and characters without any redeeming human qualities – to a convent!

  2. I doubt you’d find 3 young novices in any convent in the western world-the average age is about 80 here–even when the ABC series was made, it was set much earlier to show some of the changes that were to lead the institution to relative obscurity-add to that the abuse scandals that have been revealed in recent years and one can see why this has happened.
