Nine’s “Voice of Rugby League” Ray Warren has signalled his likely retirement at the end of the current NRL broadcasting deal (end of 2017).

Warren, 72, told News Corp he is a “day-to-day proposition,” but is under contract until the end of the current NRL deal.

“I’d hate to think I could go for too long and damage my reputation. No one is indispensable or irreplaceable,” he said.

“One day I’m going to retire … and it will probably be at the end of this deal.”

Warren was recruited by Nine in 1989, following previous sports commentary with TEN.

Yesterday Nine confirmed NRL broadcasting rights through to 2022.

  1. Channel 9 should take a few tips about NRL broadcasting from Foxtel. Nines broadcast can sometimes become irksome with sponsorships and promotions included, the period of unashamed gambling promotions being the most noteworthy. Ray Warren has certainly had a long and prosperous career with nine who have been a good employer as far as sports commentators are concerned.

  2. I always thought Andrew Voss would replace Ray Warren when he retired. I can’t see Nine hiring Voss after they let him go to pay tv. Obviously they didn’t have a lot of faith in him. Hadley is probably the best choice for replacing Warren. He’s by far the most experienced commentator out of anyone.
