Seven has now thrown its telemovie Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door into the mix for September.

It joins a growing mix of profile shows to lift the network’s ratings including 800 Words, The X Factor, The Chase plus US dramas including Heroes Reborn.

The bio drama from Endemol Shine is written by Justin Monjo, Michael Miller and stars NIDA graduate Joel Jackson (Deadline Gallipoli) as the boy from Tenterfield whose music took him to the USA.

It also stars Rebecca Gibney as his mother, Sigrid Thornton as Judy Garland, Sara West as Liza Minnelli, Christie Whelan Brown as Olivia Newton-John and Rob Mills as Chris Bell.

Seven also has its Molly miniseries on the way, likely to screen in February.

  3. Even if it is not a 100% accurate show and really only the people involved know the true story, but it will definitely be on my “To watch list” as I think the casting is brilliant so many excellent Australian actors/actresses on one show, who would not want to watch it just for that alone.

  4. Interested in this and especially looking fwd to the Molly one but they will be PVR’d to skip the intrusive inanity of the ads that will be stuffed into these.

  5. Just saw the clip and am now a little concerned about the historical accuracy of this.
    Not sure how Peter and Liza could be pictured in front of the completed Sydney Opera House in 1968 when she first visited, as shown in this clip, when the building was still under construction then and not completed until late 1973. Why such a sloppy approach to history? Hope that is not a sign for the rest of the series.

  9. Contender for highest rating non sport programme this year. Will take nearly all 50+ viewers and will probably pleasantly skew younger than they expect too.

    Molly also feels like a good decision.

  11. What a shame Chrissie Amphlett was not still with us to reprise her amazing performance as Judy Garland. But the cast here is pretty amazing. I guess it comes down, as ever, to the script.
