  1. Couldn’t agree more Wadd… Border Security is as Reality TV as they come… constructed… scripted…
David in this case Observational is just a term for Reality TV where the characters change each week?

    1. I’ve seen US articles which argue that a show like Deadliest Catch for instance is Reality, so while it’s not one I subscribe to you are not alone. To me those “fly on the wall” shows have their derivation in Documentary and I would refer to them as Observational or Factual genre. I see Reality as going back to MTV’s The Real World where a series is cast and constructed around its characters, usually with ordinary people in extraordinary situations (but not exclusively). It has largely split into Reality: Competition (Survivor) vs Reality: Observational (Kardashians) as sub-genres. I still don’t see Border, The Force, Bondi Rescue as Reality but even Logies have had trouble with the category (I suspect largely because they don’t have time to accommodate both).

  2. It shows you how much viewers like The Hotplate – that about 200K of them will happily switch to other shows (Cats, The Bachelor, Seven factuals )

  3. Im unsure why people are so up in arms about a pash on TV…. It isnt like they were rooting on top of the bridge…. Sometimes Australia can be so prudish….
