British performer Cilla Black, best known for her pop hits and TV presenting, has died, aged 72.

The singer of such hits as Anyone Who Had a Heart and You’re My World is believed to have died of natural causes in her Spanish home.

Born Priscilla White, she released 14 albums but later established herself as a television personality, presenting hit shows including Surprise Surprise and Blind Date.

In 1968, she became the first woman to have her own prime-time chat show on BBC One.

Last year she was awarded an outstanding contribution prize at the BAFTA Television Awards. Andrew Newman, the chairman of BAFTA’s television committee, said: “From hosting her own show for the BBC in ’68 to defining ITV entertainment throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Cilla has been an extremely popular and hugely influential entertainer throughout her long career in television.”

In more recent years, despite suffering from arthritis and deafness, she remained in the public eye.

Her rise to stardom was recently told in three-part drama, Cilla, starring Sheridan Smith.
