Two top brass from 7-ELEVEN have resigned following revelations on Four Corners that the convenience store chain has been underpaying staff, many of whom are international students.

Russ Withers has resigned as chairman, while Chief executive Warren Wilmot also resigned.

Withers will stay chairman of the group holding company that owns both 7-Eleven and Starbucks stores. Former iiNet and West Coast Eagles chairman Michael Smith has been appointed in his place.

“Naturally this is a major decision for me to stand aside as chairman, however I will continue to be a shareholder and I am determined to make sure the company is in the right hands to move forward,” Withers said.

A company statement also said, “Mr Wilmot acknowledged it would be difficult for him to play a central role in navigating the company through the current challenges it faces given his long-standing executive role and that a new independent CEO was appropriate in the current circumstances.”

In August Four Corners revealed exploitation of workers led all the way to the top, with a insider claiming, “They can’t run 7-Eleven as profitably and successfully as they have without letting this happen.”

An independent panel headed up by Professor Allan Fels is investigating the claims raised by ABC / Fairfax.
